edit: and Tawnik, the thing you are talking about is a Polar Reverse. It happens every 10 or so thousand years. If you cut open a big enough rock, you can see the reversal of the magnetism during that time period. Scientific proof that this shit occurs.

In 2012 the next polar reversal will take place on earth. This means that the North Pole will be changed into the South Pole. Scientifically this can only be explained by the fact that the earth will start rotating in the opposite direction, together with a huge disaster of unknown proportions.

My previous theory was that the core rotating a specific direction causes the magnetic field (north and south as well) to stay maintained. Since the polar switch occurs every 10 or so thousand years, we've never wtinessed it (on a scientific level for that matter), or studied it. So naturally, it's pretty damn weird to us. So for the magnetic north to change locations, the core has to stop spinning and turn the other way, just like a top: When spinning at full speed, the top will stay erect (Magnetic north will stay straight up, like at the top of the earth), but when the top slows down the top wavers and changes location (like what is happening now).

So basically, the core has to start spinning the opposite direction to change because it wants to, and because the core causes the EMF (electromagnetic field), when the core stops spinning the EMF will go down. When the core starts spinning again, the EMF will regenerate, but during those several months (or years) when it is down is when I think 2012 will happen. The effect of the EMF not being there will be quite horrendous and will suck sum majur dick.
