because the end of the world is an astronomical event that could, probably, be predicted using knowledge of the workings of the solar system and such, whilst the end of a civilisation is an insignificant event that would be caused more by personal and evolutionary failings rather than an astronomical event

conspiracy theories. if we die in 2029, we die. if the information posted there is accurate (and i'll trust the data more than a theory), nothing happens.

If somehow we get hit, then two things that I can foresee, directly from the event, can happen:
One, it might hit the ocean. salt water floods all the low lying coastal areas, rendering them unusable for agriculture, unless we clear out the soil and put new soil in.
Two, it might hit land. a sizable area will be taken out. Dust clouds let out from it would likely kill a ton of people. once it settled, nothing more would happen from it.

either possibility could crack into the crust, and if it goes farther could cause massive damage, either by punching through, shifting continental plates around, or forcing magma up, either through the crack or through various volcanic and once volcanic mountains, causing more damage. All in all, humanity would probably still survive somewhere.

They know it won't hit. They showed the margin for error in the article. There is no way it'll kill us: it'll just be pretty to watch.

I don't even understand everyones fascination with death and the year??? So basically I could be at a party at new years eve and as the ball drops (where ever what ever) A giant asteroid kills everyone somehow? Or it could be seconds before the next year from that year on it makes no sense originally.

The Mayan's prediction was not about the end of the world, though. They made extremely accurate predictions about the stars, yes. Telling what time lunar and solar eclipses happened. On 12/21/2012, is when the solar system lines up, or the sun and earth line up to the center of the galaxy, or something like that. The prediction was towards that, and not towards the end of the world.

If you consider the end of the world to be mass extinction and great change then the prediction was towards the "end of the world." The Mayan's believe that the world was "destroyed and reborn" like 4 times and that it will happen once more and then after that nothing more is said.
Since the Mayan's based their calenders off of major astronomical events it's believed that the ending of such a calender would be a time of great change.
