although nipping it in the bud completely and saying it would be best if we'd never come down from the trees is an equally interesting line of argument.

Best for who? Us? I think not, sure a lot of us have been murdered and tortured to death, but we never would have reached the realizations, philosophy's, loves, and dreams had we not.

I'm sure humanity as a whole is pleased to have existed (if I may anthropomorphise it briefly) but would the rest of the planet be able to say the same? Has the dodo benefited more from our philosophies than it has suffered?

But why should we give a damn about the dodo? Why should we care about our planet beyond the necessary climates we populate, and when we form the tech to leave our planet for others, why should we care about earth and the creatures on it?

We are considering whether it is good or bad that humanity existed. To not take the dodo's position into account would be like deciding whether Hitler was good or not ignoring any impact he may have had on Jews.

Humanity was the one species that was able to advance into the now intelligent status. If humanity were not to exist, then another species would have taken that place. Simply put we're not evil, we've probably stopped the world from being taken over by angry alligators who have decided to eat every living creature in sight.

Your comment reeks of presumptions. Who says that some other intelligent species would have arisen? It's not like intelligence is always the inevitable outcome of life.

I'm just saying, Humanity evolved somehow. We were once just as thoughtless as any other animal (I didn't mean that offensively). But we eventually started discovering things before any other animal and soon started to evolve due to our surroundings. Whose to say that if humanity didn't discover it, maybe some other species may have. In which case they could have evolved and became intelligent as we are today.

I think this whole debate insinuates that we are better/different than other animals. Why are we even questioning our evilness? Do we question what Lions do to be evil? We are PART of nature, how can we destroy it? We are just another animal. Our ways are only more evolved than other animals, our thought processes and actions more intricate. Our buildings are part of nature, as are our machines, weapons and technology.

Very true. I actually had a conversation with a few fellow students recently and we got to this topic. We started coming to an agreement that even though we see everything we make as being different, plastic is made of extremely old organic matter, concrete is made of rock, metal is taken from rocks(and I consider it a type of rock itself, personally) and everything we wear is either recently dead plant matter or extremely old plant matter. So we are essentially a force of nature now, in my opinion. We affect our climate, our ecosystem is entirely regulated by our species, our landscape is heavily effected by our constructive efforts, and we even transform life to suit our needs, influencing it to evolve or manually altering it more recently. We have become such a huge part of this world that calling us evil and worthy of extinction is absurd. We are a very novel form of life. Animals who have changed the biosphere in a more more rapid way than photosynthesizing algae changed the atmosphere and we'll achieve more extreme results I'm sure. Life will never be the same now that we're around and whether that's good or bad is a non-issue. It's the way it is and life will evolve around the new rules we've set up.

In truth we all have a sin nature, lust, greed, envy, even in some cases a morbid sense of glee when viewing apon the beauty of insanity as somtimes as do I. So is humanity evil yes but God gave a common goodness to love in Him

Humanity isn't evil. God made us to be good and its the ways of evil that went to humanity that turned us evil. In other words: We are completely innocent of being evil. its our decision anyways. :P

"Evil," is a crude definition of "those who purposely commit sins." If someone were to kill kids for the sake of killing kids, I would consider that evil. Humanity isn't evil, but people living human lives who decide to be terrorists or drug lords are. If humanity was evil, then what is the point of being a kind or selfless person? If humanity is evil, then why do we have friends or people who care for one another? Sometimes there are people who put aside everything to help people they don't even know. Sure we all sin, but does that make us evil? From a Christian point of view, all can be forgiven through praying. It might not give you a feeling of instant satisfaction, but at the Golden Gates it sure as heck does! Most people just repent and can feel better about themselves! So is humanity evil? I don't think so.

Humanity lies in the morally grey area.
