Remember last year's debating competition and how well it went? Do you wish you could've partaken in it? Well here's your chance. This year I am hosting The debate competition( with the permission of Zed of course).
Let me go find Zed's rules on this as he took some good time for this and it needs to be done well.
Oh and this is also me being lazy…

To Start out:

1) Whoever wins this does not automatically become "right" in any future debates. To say that they did would be like saying that Van Gogh spilling a can of paint on the floor makes better artwork automatically than a person who spent six hours painting a landscape. It's possible if the other guy was crap but generally you still have to put the effort in to get results.

2) The debates done for this competition will be closed. Only the two people involved may make posts relevant to the debate and besides them the only people allowed to post will be admins, moderators and the judge who was asked to monitor the debate. If anyone else thinks they have something to add to the debate and feel the need to share it they can create their own topic.

3) No one is obliged to take part and no one will think any less of you if you do not want to.


4) All the usual forum rules will apply throughout the competition. Failure to adhere will result in a warning and then a disqualification. The only exception is during judges deliberations (see below) where no warning will be given.

The debates will work as follows:

1) Each debate will consist of two people. They will have been selected at random using a number generator by me. You will have to trust me on this. People will not automatically be defending their own viewpoints, although I will allow people to state when they apply any points of view which they think they could not possibly defend (the topics are listed below).

2) The motion will be given in the form "This house [believes in Santa]". The opening post for the topic will list who is taking part, in this example I will call them Steve and Alfred. Steve will be the proposition. He will argue in favor of the existence of Santa and present arguments to persuade people that belief in Santa is a good thing. Alfred will be the opposition. He will then argue against the existence of Santa and try and persuade people that belief is a negative thing.

3) The proposition will go first in all debates. After that you may post at any time, although double posting rules still apply. The thread will be open for a week from when it is first posted. During this time there is no limit to how many posts may be made or to the word count, however the judges might get bored reading a huge post in which case it could be counter productive.

4) Once the time limit is up each participant will be asked to make one final closing argument. After this the decision on who has won will go to a panel of three or five judges (depending on how many people want to judge and the stage of competition). The judges will use the same thread as the debators to discuss who they think presented the best arguments. The debators themselves must not post on the thread during the deliberations or they will be disqualified. Once the judges have reached a majority decision (lets say Alfred) that person will be declared the winner and will advance to the next round (Alfred will then go on to debate against Sophie who had earlier beaten Frederick, although no one had been paying attention).

6.The House Believes that single sex schooling promotes homosexuality.
7.The house believes that humans should start space colonization.
8.The House believes that television is a bad influence on a child.
9.The House believes that Zoos do more harm than good.
10.The House Believes the Atomic bombing of Hiroshima was necessary.
11.The House Believes that advertisements do more harm than good.
12.The House believes that there should be a ban at television advertisements aiming towards children.
13.The House Believes that Age Discrimination in the workplace should be made illegal.
14.The house believes that the Age of Consent Laws Should Be Lowered.
15.The House Believes that the sale of alcohol should be further restricted.
16.The House Believes That Anarchism is A Valuable Political Ideology.
17.The House believes That The Assassination of a Dictator Can be Justified.
18.The House Believes That biofuels are a better alternative than Fossil Fuels.
19.The House Believes that Cosmetic Surgery Should be Banned.

20:The House Believes that Abortion should be made(or kept) legal.
21.The House proposes that Euthanasia is politically correct.
22. The House believes that Slaughterhouses should use a less painful form of killing.

Now,
I'm going to give two weeks as of today, March 29 of where I am, for entries for the competition.
We will obviously be in need of contestants and Judges.
Yes, you can be a contestant and a judge,
but I will personally make sure that any judging you can do will not affect the outcome of any debates you will be facing.
I will be doing all the selecting by a random numbers generator,
if you feel uncomfortable with a topic, as in it is something you feel to strongly about, tell me in advance so I don't put you in that topic.
