@Sumfink: It would essentially become you only because the old you has been destroyed. No one is arguing that the replica wouldn't be a worthy successor, simply that it is NOT the same original person.

Wait, if we had the technology to create an entire person with teleportation then we should have the same technology to create someone at anytime. So theoretically (if you guys settle the debate on consciousness) we could in fact live forever, all we would have to do is create ourselves at a younger age and keep on doing that every time we die.
Not to steer off topic though.

How about if the population of the human race gets out of hand?

I've pondered this most of my life, and I have never came to a conclusion at least not one that is reasonable.

I think that it would be even more the original person than, let's say, the you 3 seconds before teleportation, because you are always changing- new memories and thoughts added, cells replaced. It basically comes down to the question, "Are two things that are functionally identical the same?" I think yes, you think no. I doubt it will ever be resolved.
And for this to work, are we assuming that all your memories of teleportation and of the time that has passed have been deleted? Because if not then you would be a different person anyway.
@super fire: There would have to be some kind of brth control, or a mandatory maximum lifespan. But let's stop here.

One could argue that if the new you, believes that it is indeed you, that it would be you. What makes you, you? Do you believe you're you? If it believes it's you and you're originality is no longer conscious than wouldn't it be you just as much as you're you? If it believes it's you just as much as you believe you're you?

That argument is invalid because the concept of "you" changes with every millisecond of memory added. It would not, in fact, be "you," but a different albeit similar person in your place. It could, however, take the place of the "you" that was erased by teleporting. It would probably believe that it was you, but it wouldn't be, this is an illusion created by the human concept of self.
I think it would also matter how the world around you defines "you". If somehow the original you was not destroyed and two of you existed, one of you would be forced by society to assume a new life as a different person (if they weren't just killed, of course), so then two possible futures for you would exist at once. Then the pre-teleportation "you" would not even exist anymore, there would now be two different people living out their lives who happened to be remarkably similar to "you."

your first body dies...but if the machine makes a second body atom for atom...i guess a new body is formed. but technically, it is not your first body, so its a new life-form
...and we dont really know if it moves...its kinda the machines part to move you

Wait a tic. I read the first post wrong.
If your body's particles are transported across space unharmed to lets say, the moon, then it should still be your body. It'd be no different than dying and being revived again.
So you would probably be the same guy.

Good point. But the experience of having that happen to you would change your view of the world and your mind, so you wouldn't really be the same person anyway.

What makes you, "You"? Like you said it's concept, if you say you're you then it says he's you, it would be unfair to say it isn't you because it is a replica of you nearly exactly. The only difference is that it had the experience of going through a teleporter and you don't. If anything it can say that it's you and you're just a similar copy right? I don't see how my last argument is invalid at all.

If you somehow survive the process then why would there be an unnecessary clone? Even if there was, the clone could just as easily say that you're the clone and he's not, if he honestly believes that then his concept is that he is you. Therefore it would be impossible to prove he's not, he's just as much you as you're you then.

Holy shit. I just watched something about this exact same thing on the science channel. It literally just ended. They didnt address the consiousness problem though. And i couldnt really hear it because my dad has the AC on right behind me. Shame... woulda been intresting to see what they had to say.

no it would be different look at it like this you and your same gendered sibling same process same chromeazones same person same geneology same family same parents but your different you look and act different you should be clones but your different people and thats what would happen you would now be different people a pope cloned could be a saint or a douche and everything inbetween so if you seemed the same you certainly wouldnt be the same person/ality

1. Use sentences.
2. Don't bump.
And what you're saying is that people with identical genes act differently because of their experiences? That was never challenged.
Crap, now you've called attention to this thread again and everyone will know that Jutsu out-debated me... >_<

Actually, I suppose its a lot like being braindead. You literally do not exist personality wise for those few minutes.
But then you wake up, and you are you again. You guys forget we are not some kind of conscious personality, we are our brain. If we took our particles and modelled them in a different place we would STILL be our brain. Therefor we would still be ourselves.
