GE Zombie Sim

As I understand, we have a couple very good programmers amongst us. Let me begin.

I've always wanted to make an expansive zombie game. No, not like L4D or shitty RPGs. I mean a top-down, completely realistic zombie simulator in which you have to find weapons food and ammo in order to survive. But whatever. I never got around to it.

Then I played this.

This game uses Google Earth to create a map for which the player can run around on. And while the game is not perfect and sort of plays itself, the usage of Google Earth as a game engine is astounding.

This is what I'm suggesting:
That we, either using screenshots or Google Earth itself (somehow) we make a massive top-down shooter/RPG game. with leveling up and maybe quests and shit. But no turn-based shit.

Now, chaps, are you interested? This is what I'm thinking. I'm doing research into this game to see how it was done. Let's say hypothetically we have to take screenshots of GE. fair enough. We make a grid and put each screenshot side-by-side in a single, really big picture file, and crop out every building and tree. Then, when we make the game, either in GM7 or Flash or whatever, we place the buildings in as static props that you can't just float over. We could do the same with cars and such. Eventually, if this picks up enough steam, we could add random room generators for the buildings, operational vehicles, quests and whatnot. Maybe even some multiplayer, because that would be fucking awesome; running into times square with your friends and holding off the zombies.

What I'm willing to put into this:
-I can make as many sprites as you need me to make
-Download any programs
-Offer ideas and write a plot and storyline if you guys want
-Put lots of time into learning programming and managing this.

I swear, if this gets popular, everyone associated with this game will be acknowledged and rewarded accordingly.

And if this doesn't get very far, well, at least we tried. So who's with me?

Of course, these are all suggestions. Use the sprite sheet I'll post as a scale for your guns. This list is just for those lazy bastards who just want to sprite anything. You can sprite any crazy gun you want, as long as the gun meets visual requirements, a real picture is given, and a link to its caliber and information and whatnot. Also, include a short description of the gun, its pros and cons, and where it belongs in the game.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Correct size
Facing to the right
Correct shading
Linked to a real image of firearm
Caliber information
Price of gun in the real world
General information
Pros and Cons of the gun
Why is should be in the game/where it would fit in/where you would pick the gun up.

You can always make up your own guns too. They can be any fantasy shit you want them to be, just give me information and a description of how they'd work into the game.

My skills at this sort of programming are minimal to say the best. I just started working with 2-D graphic engines. I'm more for text based RPGs. Which I already have a game started for zombie survival, if you want to just add on to that.

Is OpenGL? I just started on 3D programming, but that's essentially the same, just a bit more difficult mathemically. We could pull an okay engine off with the two of us.

Hey, you can be something other than Programmers if you want. Feel free to ask for another position (in addition to your current position :P)

Okay, what method do you guys want to use? These are the options that came to mind:
Using a Google Earth Plugin
Making an independent grid. (Pasting screenshots in order to cover a wide area.)
other methods are welcome.

I think copyright laws come in with the Google Earth plugin. It may be easier legal wise to make our own maps.

I meant that even though I started 3D, I should be able to do 2D. 3D would be way too hard.


Also, I can also do writing and design.

And we should do names at the end. Focus on our means of production first.

Engine -> Gameplay -> Levels -> Story and all that crap

As long as we keep the game free (which we are) and include Google Earth in the credits and/or menu and write a paragraph in the main menu praising them, maybe they'll let us go. Besides, it'll be a while until they notcie. That other game is doing fine, and google is pretty cool.

Anyhow, let's establish where this game is going to take place. Guys, check the top post for our goals for now.

Maybe we can make a seperate thread so that you can make your own characters and/or ideas for missions and we could consider that. You know, just a request and/or suggestion thread.

Our problem is, we have no idea how they did it and we are not experienced enough by far to use such things.

I've been using SFML, but I don't really like it. I may try SDL, but I'm told SFML is better. That's for the engine by the way. Main character should be called Lucifer. Name inspires fear

Niggah, please, why not make our own engine?

2D shouldnt be all too hard, might be a bit time consumin but if you really want to make a game, you're not going to pull it off in 2 weeks anyway.

anyways, what are you guys thinking for the programming? I'm working out right now, but after that I'll sketch up Main Menu ideas and some concept art.

Well, first we need an engine to be able to actually create everything. ChristianEater isn't too confident in making an engine, so he wants to use a pre-built one, but I think we could pull it off. If we can get that over with, we should be able to actually start making shit, lol.
