So this quarter at school I am in a botanical rendering/illustration class. Well it is fun but also extremely tedious and detailed oriented. I have made 100's on both assignments or at least will on the orchid once I made a few adjustments to it this weekend. I will try and post a colored version of the orchid drawing once I get a chance to scan it. There are two more projects left so this thread will still get update for the next 4 weeks until I'm out of school for break (can't wait!!).

Botanical Renderings:

This is a rendering of a Coral Cactus. This is the result of about 60+ish hours of work and it is all done with Prismacolor colored pencils. It was an absolute pain to replicate the cactus three times and I'm glad my teacher didn't want them to all be colored as well as the middle. She was going for more of a color seeping into the other ones that then fade to the tonal drawing. I was for doing whatever would take less work.

This is still in progress.. I have finished coloring it for the most part but I need to edit some thing before I upload the finished drawing. This is the tonal rendering which is done in warm greys 10%-90%.

The beginning of the under drawing for my next plant: the Flamingo Plant. We also have to include insects in the image so I have a Monarch caterpillar and butterfly.

pretty boss, dude. I got no crits lol. The cacti on the side look like exact mirrors of each other.

What size is the paper you used?

Both are custom sizes. The cactus I think is 12" by 20" and the orchid is 10" by 20" and both pieces are drawn on Arches watercolor paper 140lb. I have to eventually get them matted.

Nice work man.
You're going to be drawing pictures for oceanography books haha.

Practicing with this much detail should help you be just as efficient in other drawings as well, good luck in your courses!

lol that is not my desire at all. :P
I am a 3D Animation major and this is just a drawing elective class I am taking with a teacher I had before. This is my last drawing class and thus I don't plan on doing anything with the detailed oriented field of art. I do plan on selling prints of this though at a gallery showing we are having for the class.

Autodesk Maya and lynda.com has a lot of useful video tutorials though you have to pay for that service. Fortunately lynda is free because my school pays for it though I haven't really look at any of the videos because I get instruction in class. Good luck to you.

Finished and scanned the orchid drawing. I'll post the next project scan in a few hours after I have more work done on it.
