Ron't you remember that new RHG system on the portal of FA?
Where people actually had a formula for creating the RHG, which also meant that the probability of them creating it wrongly was much lower.
and you could access a list of all RHGs ( username -- RHG name)
That would save us the work of creating a thread for that.

oh and regarding he clean up: there are still lots of clans that got either just one member or they got 3-4 but their last post was like half a year ago and noone knows if they are active on IRC

I was looking at how WeiEn did it and I go to actually thinking about making a dynamic flash that's connected to a database that we can maintain. As far as I know Stone WANTS to make an automated RHG system but has neither the time nor the funding for it. So if it's just a list of RHGs you'd want, we could collaborate on a cool ass flash that we can just pop into a stickied thread.

The way I was thinking:

Main Page would look something like this:

Image

- Shows RHGs alphabetically
- scrolls horizontally
- dynamically loads more as the user scrolls

There would be options that could pop down at the top when moused over that lets the user click on a letter to jump to that spot. There could also be a search box that users can type in to start looking for a particular RHG (rhg name or author?).

This system would rely on people submitting their RHG to the list. WeiEn had a system where basically whenever you madeor updated an RHG, you posted on the thread letting him know and giving him a link. He would then go to your page, verify the information, then add it manually to the big-ass list. What we could do is have a button for submitting your RHG to the flash list, then I could make a separate page either in the flash or somewhere else where mods could log in and see a list of pending RHG submissions.

All a mod would have to do is go through the list, click each pending RHG to go to their page, verify the information, then go back to the page and accept the RHG, where it would be added automatically to the public list.

The benefit of this system is that all the information would be stored in a database, so editing would be very easy. It also seems like a better way to present and maintain the information.

A few people have been talking in depth with me about the one-word posts rule and I've started to really rethink it. I want to discuss it more with you guys and see what you think.

Reasons For:

- The forums have a different pace and focus than other faster methods of chat (WLM or IRC, for example), and infractions for one-word posts discourages people from treating it like a chat program
- Generally, one-word posts are not worthy efforts to contribute to a discussion
- Usually verge on spamming, things like "lol" or "fag" are simplistic non-responses that should be avoided

Reasons Against:

- Sometimes it's necessary to reply with just one thing, forcing extra words usually doesn't add to the overall message (IE yes or no questions that require no further explanation)
- Threads sometimes move at a faster pace anyway, so during a back-and-forth conversation in the chat thread it might be necessary to quickly respond than to potentially miss conversation

I'm starting to think we should axe the rule as an absolute, and start looking at it case-by-case. In situations where it's pretty much spam, we should use a new infraction called "Minor Spam", which can also blanket cases that don't warrant the default 1-day ban the regular spam infraction gives. So, in a situation where someone quotes someone else and just says "lol", we could infract them with a minor spam infraction and warn them that they should contribute more to the discussion.

Yeah, i can agree with that. Its really only when it becomes a constant issue from any single user. Sometimes witty one liners can still be on topic and useful to a degree.

Its rare though that just "lol" is ever useful by itself.

Alright I have made changes to the Moderator Handbook and the Official Forum Rules to reflect the change to the rule. I've also made a notice topic so that everyone is aware of the change.

Also, I'm thinking about having a monthly competition among the moderators to see who can get the best stats overall (Mod Actions + Infractions + Points). I'm just not sure what an appropriate reward would be. What would you guys like to see if we do set something up?

Op on the irc channel for a little bit would be a cool prize, unless you already have it that is :P

Winner gets to be an admin for the next month.

Unrelated: Guys, when you're giving out infractions for double posting it's good to check if some or all of the posts in question are down as "moderated" (it will have "moderated" instead of a number in the top right corner). If they are then the guy posting can't see his previous posts so he may just think the forum glitched and not know he's doing it.

I don't know if temporarily awarding additional power is a good idea, because there's not much point to giving it out unless you were gonna abuse it in some way lol

Also, I've been thinking about whipping together a very basic portal that I can host off-site while Jay and his team work on the new SP one. It's coming up on a year since the merge and we are still portal-less, and it remains as one of the common complaints about the merge. I figure if I can put something basic together and put it up it will calm everyone down while we wait. Anyone else for this idea?

Well is it possible for you to create a portal and perhaps hold it elsewhere on one of your own domains that you have rather than here? Unless you can convince those that need to be convinced to allow you to add the portal to StickPage.
I think it's a good idea and will get the community more involved in things.

I think what they really want is transferability in that if you have to host the portal on a different domain rather than StickPage, all of their files and information will be transferred over if/when StickPage gets a portal.
I'm sure people who had portfolios of content over at FA are rather upset because their work is gone.

I'm for it.

I like that idea, Jeff. It would be really good if we had a basic portal until a full one is made.

I think the problem is with a portal on a different domain would make people confused, or possibly limit the amount of people uploading and stuff. But, I could be wrong.
