What are some good, free games?

I'll explain myself. I may be travelling somewhere for this February break, and all I'll be able to bring for entertainment for the 12 hour drive is my laptop. So I'm looking for things I can play on it.
The games don't have to be free games. I can 'buy' them if it comes to that.

To contribute to my own thread:

Dwarf Fortress
Kerbal Space Program
Powder Toy
Total Annihilation
Space Explorer

These are all good time-wasters.

Free... Tough. Almost no games are free nowadays. I may Suggest Total war. It will surely take 2 weeks to complete.

not to sound like a bad guy, but you could always just find a crack for a really old game.

GET THAT NOW.

It'll cost around 5 to 10 bucks, but you might as well torrent it. I spent an entire summer playing that game non-stop.
