I don't think its fair to say that the Part that introduced Stands is the Part that dictates what Stands really are. I mean, Parts 1 and 2 basically ripped off First of the North Star and just evolved on their ideas.

Comics retcon things all the time to fit the bill. There was no way Araki could ever predict that he'd last long enough to say that the Bow and Arrow is actually mystical in nature, then turning out to be alien, then eventually manmade form of radiation.

It's not the practice of retcon and inspiration that bothers me, it's the fact that the concept of stands not simply being ordinary powers but connected personas was a really cool concept. The future parts kind of get rid of that aspect more and more, especially in Part 7.

You can't blame Part 7. There was a cosmic retcon.

You're missing my point. Regardless of the fact that Part 7 was the mother of all retcons, it doesn't mean that it couldn't have inherited the same ideas of stands from previous parts, nor do I think that the supposed retcon of the stands is any better than the original ideas presented in part 3.
