I fucking hated Shinsekai Yori.
You know you fucked up when the best character is Squealer, the second best is Kiroumaru, and the third best is fucking Maria. The fucking density of the two MC's just made me want to rip my skin off. "We're slaves, and we kind of don't want to be slaves anymore" isn't justifiable reason for a revolution? How many fucking times do they have to ask "yo why u do dis" before they get the fact that they're completely in the wrong from a moral point of view? They just HAD to know that Squealer was a human before they realized how fucking wrong they were. They're trying to be all high and mighty, but if that creature can fucking speak then it doesn't matter if you share the save DNA if we're looking at it from a moral point of view. The fact that two 26 year olds, one is reared to become basically the next president and the other one is a scientist, cannot grasp such a simple concept and have to act like prepubescent shitheads, literally had me screaming at my screen. I'm way too emotional right now.
Also, how about burning your own trump card (aka the dumbest name ever Psychobuster)? Hey that's a great fucking idea! Why the fuck didn't she just make a shield or something if she wanted to save her friend? Shit I guess it's OK for the rest of the world to fuck itself so long as a friend that I just recently reconciled with after years of falling out is still alive. Wait actually the mysterious voice of my dead crush from 12 years ago is telling me something that is definitely LESS contrived than a Psychobuster. Yep he's right we should kill Kiroumaru because I totally care about him less and this makes me a great human being.
At the very fucking least I expected the new way to beat the "Fiend" would also save his(her?) life, but nope. He(She?) still dies. Literally nothing would change if MC didn't burn their trump card other than the fact that a dumb character lives instead of a superior character.
But my other main gripe other than the immature characters is that the whole first part of the show is about the mysterious past and the fucked-up social order. I thought the show was going to be the five friends slowly unraveling the secrets of the adults, but then I guess the writer thought that he should just write about slavery.
Also, who cares about that dragged out part about looking for that guy that was lusting for Maria (the "Fiend's" dad or something)? I don't think a single person was on the edge of his seat just anxious to see what happened to him or where he ran to, so why did they have to dedicate an entire episode for it? And why didn't that literal four eyes just sacrifice himself and kill the fiend? He knew he was going to die anyway, might as well take one for the fucking team. And why didn't they just seal the Cantus of every single person? Literally none of the conflicts would have happened if they just did that. Does anyone remember that bald monk guy that killed the Evil Minoshiro? How did he get a fucking death feedback when he killed a machine, or when he killed a bunch of queerats? There's just so many bullshit that piles on top of each other for me man. There's also the fact that they had almost zero repercussion for breaking a fundamental law, or when they removed their own seal, or when Satoru had that episode of powerlust when he regained his Cantus? I was lead to believe that that was going to happen, but it just went poof. I guess you could argue that Shu becoming a karma demon is a consequence of what they did, there's not enough proof in there for that to be called an actual reason. It could be that he just was a lonely person. Wait, did Squealer actually have an evil minoshiro? Man I think I had more questions but I really don't care enough to nitpick that deep.
There's also that dodgy animation. There's a lot of inconsistencies that it's really hard to ignore them. Throw that in with the size of their eyes and you got yourself an ugly mess.
And then there's the out-of-nowhere overtly sexual part of the show. What the fuck.
I just hate this show man goddamn. It's been a long time since I passionately hated anything.
