I'm not particularly well versed in the horror genre, but what I've seen or looked into doesn't look very scary, creepy maybe, but nothing thats going to make me sleep with the lights on.
So does anyone have any suggestions on a terrifying anime?
It doesn't actually have to be scary, but something that will make me jump a couple of times would be nice.

True words.

Try watching Another. It isn't that scary, but it does have a creepy atmosphere and a really good story.

Nothing gives me nightmares like 39 episodes of tea.

And I'll probably watch Another eventually, it was one of the series that looked into which seemed creepy rather than scary. But I was more wondering why a studio hadn't at least attempted a frightening series or movie. Surely a few exist, seeing that anime seems to be a medium that could pull off a lot of jump scares quite easily.

Seeing as anime typically targets a younger audience and has to last for as long as possible, I could see why not many studios have attempted to create horror-themed ones. You're probably better off searching for a movie rather than a serialized anime.

Anime being targeted at a young audience is actually one of the things I think is and will hold anime back, by not producing mature content a large majority of peoples preconceptions will never be challenged and even if my horror anime is made it will probably be largely ignored (at least in the west). But I'll probably watch some supposedly scary series/movie when uni holiday come around and I have time to waste on a show that I'm not guaranteed to like.

Yes. But are you asking to discuss it or if we would recommend it?

K-ON!

only musicians can understand...

HAYATE THE COMBAT BUTLER / HAYATE NO GOTOKU :D

I really love that anime :D

(Season 1) - intro of characters and mixing other anime on the show, plus it is seriously funny XD (they broke the 3rd-wall rule on story animation)

(Season 2) - Because this anime is getting Famous... they have to make the story a bit serious :/

(Season 3 & 4) - I really dunno what happened there XD

In terms of arts, yes it will hold anime back. In terms of money, they're doing just fine.

And horror isn't always better. Cowboy Bebop, Akumetsu, and Mirai Nikki are a few great examples of non-horror, mature anime.

I haven't seen K-On, but I'm willing to bet my left nut that Beck is a more accurate representation of what it means to be a musician or band member.

Are they doing fine in terms of money? I mean how many people here buy anime or at least legally stream it (I'll use crunchyroll if they have what I want to watch, but thats about as much support you'll get out of my broke ass). I understand why companies won't try and expand the target audience, its way to big of a risk, and even if it works they probably won't make any money off it for years. But its still a shame that there is a whole untapped demographic of people who probably would enjoy anime, given it had a decent story and easily view-able (anime movies in western theaters).

Mature doesn't have to be horror, but horror has to be mature. So yeah, I'd agree. But I'd argue about Mirai Nikki being mature.

Little Witch Academia takes this probability and beat every living cell out of it.

Also, for horror anime; Jigoku Shoujou. I haven't really seen it recently and my memory of it is blurry, but I'm sure it's promising.
For horror manga; every manga ever made by Junji Ito.

Certain studios are. Brands and adverts for popular manga and anime flood hundreds of stores all around Japan. Maybe their international support isn't too strong, but within its own country some are doing phenomenally. Granted, the majority of studios are still struggling, so I guess that makes my point void.

Since we're talking about horror animes, have anyone seen Higurashi: When They Cry?
That anime is truly psychotic.

I'm recommending it. I'm not sure many people have seen that anime, but It's really good. My sister liked the show a lot.

Have anyone else seen the 3rd Berserk movie? Damn, the eclipse was simply epic.
Also do anyone know where can I watch Shigurui (eng dub\sub preferably)?
