I have vcam all set up and downloaded, and when I go to use it in an anim, it doesn't work. Although it does work in the example anim... ._.

Flash only bothers to look at the actionscript when it converts the .fla into a .swf, as it does with the test animation but not with just running through the slides. Since the Vcam is just a load of actionscript it won't do anything most of the time. It will be fine when you go to show anyone.

Pretty sure we're all talking past each other.
It's a fla already. You're animating it in fla. When you test the animation, or export the animation, it becomes a swf. Then the code on the Vcam will kick in and make it look how you want it to look. There is no problem here and nothing is broken.
Edit: ninja'd.

When you say "get it to work" are you talking about when you press enter, or when you press ctrl+enter?

Are you using the right vcam for the actionscript you're using, ie. actionscript 2 or actionscript 3?

Yeah, it says cs5 requires AS3. And the symbol says it's AS3. :0
