I made this thread to discuss this whole issue with Bloomberg (however the fuck you spell his name...) banning 16 oz. drinks from New York movie theaters to reduce obesity...
Your opinion?
Hey! Don't drink that!!!

Ok, slow down.
I believe Bloomberg is the mayor of New York, yes? But that's something I've picked up from reading The Economist in the last month or so, and since not everyone here is actively studying economics I think that might need to be clarified.
How much is 16oz. and how big a part of life is seeing a film for the average New Yorker?
Also, are these drinks alcoholic? And if not, why not?

I'm a bit confused, to reduce obesity? This can't be booze?

Specifically refering to sodas. And im also confused, i dont understand how this mayor thinks he can just dictate what new yorkers can drink or how much of it they can drink. Im pretty sure thats infringing on my rights.

well sixteen ounces of soda can't be the cause of obesity for everyone in new york, sounds like a time waster to distract you from something dastardly that the politician is enforcing

Yeah, it is pretty trivial.

16 fluid ounces is almost half a liter of liquid, for the Europeans. I don't really see why anyone would need to drink that much liquid in an hour and a half to two hours when they're in an air conditioned building, but it doesn't seem productive for any real cause to ban those kinds of drinks from movie theaters, and it is also useless because then someone can just buy an 8 oz. drink and then go for a refill, or buy more than one drink. It would be better to give people an incentive to not drink soda *at all* but then that would require actual effort.

Is that all? That's less than a pint.

So, I'd just have to buy more smaller drinks, rather than large drinks?
Sounds like all it would do is inconvenience people.

It might be a decent part actually, my mom is from Brooklyn and when she was a child her family used to get a 16 oz so that they could share it and pass it along so that other family members could have some...
Actually when she found out about this news she was more pissed than R Kelly's victim...

One single 16 oz drink isn't going to make anyone obese, but like the article says:
"currently a standard small drink at the cinemas is 16oz, with the largest ranging up to 44 oz... a regular 44 oz soda contains about 128 grams of sugar and 512 calories"
Almost a third of a pound of sugar and over 25% of your daily recommended caloric intake, from a drink you'd consume in less than 2 hours while sitting almost perfectly still. It's a little scary that this has become normal to the point where taking away the option is seen as controversial.
Soft drinks are so fucking unhealthy. People drink soda like it's water, it's the equivalent of eating cake any time you're hungry. Half the state of New York is overweight or obese, because of that I don't see any reason not to take away these ridiculous portions and give people reasonable options.

What are you, some kind of fucking retard? I just said in that same post that I don't see a reason to ban soda from movie theaters. When I said "...an incentive..." I meant making being actually healthy (read: not drinking soda) be a thing that is well-looked upon in society, like lower health insurance costs for people who would probably require less medical attention. That is something that happens ALREADY.

that makes sense, culture in america is so different from culture in britain i just forget the differences a lot of the time, no one should be able to buy an unhealthy amount of anything, that's the whole reason why most drugs are illegal, there's no reason that it shouldn't count for fast food

I think they *should* be able to purchase whatever they want, in principle, but this law doesn't prevent that. It's just an attempt to make it less sociably acceptable and common to see someone drinking soda from a cup larger than their head.
