Why do we care about Black Holes, and other cosmic stuff when we cant touch it, or tap into their power? Seems like a waste of time and money to me if we aren't trying to be able to use it. Discuss.

Cos' we have nothing else to do with our miserable lives.

hahaha true that! its way better than pillaging villages and raping children!

A lot of the time it turns out to have useful implications. GPS systems, for instance, only work because of the theory of relativity.

Because one day we might be able to use it. Technology is constantly improving at an exponential rate. Also, there isn't really much point in anything when you think about it, why not attempt to satisfy our human curiosity and discover about this place we live in?

Yet .

True. Antimatter can be useful, but even if we tap into its power along with other stuff, it still isn't economical...

We don't pursue things because they're economical. Art isn't always about money, we don't do it to "tap into power". Your argument assumes that's the core intention for everything humans do, and that's far from the case.

yes, but do you really want to waste $1,000,000,000,000 on 1 gram of antimatter?
Jun 6, 2012 6:40 PM #671609
the wording of that question is biased, you say "do you want to WASTE" the money on that. I disagree with the questions inference that the money is being wasted and thus I'm not required to answer.

My point is, if the stuff has no physical evidence whatsoever, it is a waste of money, time, and possibly human life to try to go to another star system and such.

What exactly are you even talking about? I'm getting the impression that you don't know much about the "theoretical physics" you're so quick to dismiss as a waste of time.

He probably thinks because it's got "theoretical" in the name it's only a "theory" and therefore has a 50/50 chance of being true, with no evidence either way.

It's either true or it isn't! Two choices, 50/50!

therefore strong agnosticism
