Recently at our high school the mother of three kids killed herself leaving an 18 year old son a 16 year old daughter and another son who is in the 5th grade. During the day that we found out about this, one of my friends and I were talking about it and he said that he felt bad for the mother, and I said why would you feel sorry for such a selfish person. The argument went on about wether it was truely selfish to kill ones self even though that the mother had severe emotional problems.

I think she was probably too messed up to even think about the others

It's not so much selfishness as it is cowardice.
A way of running from problems, as opposed to facing them regardless of how hard it may be. There's always someone who has been through worse than you have and has gotten out alive, there's really no justified excuse to take your own life.

In my opinion, I think it's selfish. When you kill yourself, you inconvenience everyone: your family, your friends, and your workers.
Too bad for her.
Too bad for her.

Depends I think...
I've had suicidal thoughts, but everytime I have them, it's not to get rid of my problems because I don't have any serious ones, it's to rid society of myself, to get rid of some of it's problems. Sometimes I just feel like nothing more than a nuisance to society and I shouldn't be here, therefore I have those thoughts. Different things can spark it, but I never think of suicide to get rid of my problems, but to get rid of other people's.
My suicidal thoughts are unselfish. At least in the way I think about them. Depends on the opinion of the person in question. Some would say I'm insane. I'd agree. But I have friends who disagree. Blah, ramble, ramble.
tl;dr Depends on the individual person's opinion.

Quote from Krob.Death is the beginning of a new life.
God damn, those drugs really DID change your prospective.
I feel that it's more cowardness, like The Pirate said. She most likely had a horrible mind-set if she would actually leave those children in that state.

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
Because the happiness, money, and time that you would take from your family and others is unselfish.

Way to separate my post and make me look like an emo asshole. In those times, I feel like I'm doing nothing but forcing my parents to waste money and time on me, like I'm just hurting my family and friends and it would be better if I were just gone.

How do you view it as unselfish though?

Once I'm gone, my parents will have more money and time for other things, and my friends will be less bothered.
I'm not saying it's unselfish, but when I'm in that state of mind, that's just how I view it. I'm slowly getting a grip on it though.

First, if you killed yourself then they would all live with that pain for the rest of their lives. Selfishness.
Next, if your friends think you are a bother, then they aren't your friends anyways. Get over it and move on.

Yes but Face Plate, imagine what you are actually doing.
You are wasting all of that money, emotion and time, that they have already spent on you. Then you are making them have to have an even bigger emotional burden and finacial burden upon them. You are also making it seem like all of the money, emotion and time spent on you is worthless.
I think Bonk has nailed it though. Everything can be worked out regardless, that or start over somewhere new.

You have so little self esteem to a point where you'd kill yourself. You should really do something big in your life like become a rock star. Who cares what society thinks of you. What have they ever done for you, except make you feel shit. Like all of us, we leech off society. Rock the casbah.
