The first 15 episodes (Original intended to be the determined length of the anime)
Surrounds the main character getting a next gen High tech gaming system called the nervegear, with it a MMORPG game called "Sword art online".
The game is literally supposed to replicate real life to fiction as closely as possible, while keeping the RPG aspects intact (Leveling up, skills, items, life bars, etc.).
So eventually the main character finds out you can't log out of the game unless you beat all 100 floors n shit, and if you die in the game, the nervegear will fry your brain, killing you in real life (even if someone were to try and remove it on the outside).
So they're basically trapped in the world of SAO until they beat the game.
That's the first arc though (again, it was "intended" to be the whole story plot, but they decided to milk the series and move to other games.)
