Zed you're being an asshole and a prick and your points are unnecessarily totalitarian and your opinion is far too uncompromising for me to want to speak to you right now.

Who's the asshole, the one who calmly responds to an argument with a well thought out post, or the one who responds further with 'you are mean and I'm not talking to you'?

well thought out is a matter of opinion. I could've just ignored him but I'd rather tell someone why I'm not going to properly respond to their post. I'm also tipsy and incapable of constructing a proper argument

I've seen both methods used (simply telling someone to put away their phone, or confiscating it for parents to take), and neither have helped solve the problem...

Guys, I think that eventually the texting will get too out of hand and it will be used for reasons like cheating because one student "didn't do her homework" or the other kid "needed test answers".

If you do have a school-wide ban on cell phone usage in class, how do you propose the administration enforce it effectively?

Our school has this exact policy and enforces it very well. They simple take the phone away. Your parents have to retrieve it, and you also get detention. I don't see why you can't fathom this.

The problem of the very strict schools or teachers that take your phones if they see you with it when you are just seeing the hour or putting it in silence and they take it, I think that just ten seconds of using it it's OK.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned about bullying.

What does that have to do with cell phone usage in school?

Cyber-bullying? I think that would be a possible reason for getting cell phone use banned.

I don't think that would be wise Luzoto. I think cell phones can be brought to school as long as they don't use them any time during school. Any time after that is fine. That's how it is in my school. Also I don't think cell phones should be used for research, if the teacher really wanted you to research something I'm sure they would take you to the computer labs or library or whatever.

I'm just saying that's a possible reason why people might want cell phones banned. I don't exactly an opinion on this matter, because both taking away cell phones and asking for people to put them away have failed to do anything here. Personally, I think cell phones should only be put away during class, but anywhere else where you're not learning in school is fine. That's how they do it here, but enforcing no cell phones in class hasn't worked very well :/

Well in my school what we did was you werent suppose to have your phone out...granted some teachers didnt care as long as you didnt use your phone during tests...and in my Astronomy class we actually used our phones once in a while...So i find that using a phone in class not during testing is fine and it does help for certain things...like in Astronomy we used our phones for geocaching and sidereal times (so we didnt have to do the equation every time we wanted to know the sidereal time...I mean we used it for alot of reasons in Astronomy so phones can be integrated in classes...now on the other side of this phones can be bad...I saw so many people not listening to teachers because of their phones (mainly girls because social life is better than learning apparently and i dont mean that in a sexist way it just happens to be true)...This people would always have to copy the lessons after we got done with the lessons because their phone was their time spent in class...Now i didnt see more than 5 people in a class like this but they were usually the ones that got A's on their homework and F's/D's on their tests and would average out to about a C/B- when the semester ended...Which isnt bad but cheating on the homework (because thats what most people did either by using the internet to solve all the problems or a friend) doesnt mean you learned anything so people on their phones all day dont retain anything from school and thats why there are dumb people in the world now-a-days

So all and all i think phones can be used at school but not overused in class

For purposes like that, phones wouldn't be the best choice, albeit it's quite efficient. I think if schools are going to use things like that they should get iPads or laptops.

My school has completely prohibited phone use through the school, as long as you're inside the building, your phone will be taken for a whole week if seen, even if it's before or after school hours.
I kind of think it's a tad harsh, but some idiots at my school complain when they're thick-skulled enough to use it despite the warnings. You know the punishment, you take the risk of facing that punishment, and then complain about the punishment, knowing it was going to happen?
I think that's pretty fucking stupid.
