School teaches you about discipline as well. While learning is at the top of the list, there are other things that students can gain from schooling. I agree that phones can be used before and after school. But not during. You are giving your phone up for 6 hours, not a lifetime. Have some fucking self control. This reminds me of the "can you live without your phone thread". People are becoming so dependent on their phones that they can't part with it for a few seconds, and as a result start to make excuses to why they need it. You can survive without your phone, it isn't the end of the world. If you want to call your parents during school time you can always go to the office and ask.
People seem to want to allow phone use because they feel like they have the right to use it, and the school is some fricken dictatorship. In that case why can't we extrapolate that. Let kids decide their own subjects as well. You don't like maths, fuck maths, you don't have to do it. You can't always depend on kids to make the correct decision. Too much freedom is just as bad as none at all. People can't honestly believe that all 12 year olds know what is good for them? Teach them the right way, so that when they are old enough to make the right decisions, they can do as they please.
Another point that I mentioned and people seem to ignore is cyber bullying. This is a legitimate reason for why phones should be banned. While it is unfortunate that the actions of the few affects the many, these actions can have drastic consequences. Allowing an unrestricted use of phones will allow greater opportunities for abuse and misuse. Victims of this cyber bullying may have to deal with it for tbe whole day, both inclass room and outside. In comparison if you only allow phones to be used before and after school, kids can easily avoid such mistreatment. Of course, running away from the problem is not an effective way to deal with something, but neither is creating more. I feel safer knowing that I am notbeing filmed by some dickish kids.
As mentioned before there is also the issue of distractions. How does introducing more potential distractions allow for better education? I hear the argument that phone use allows for research, but that is what you can use computer labs for. What is the difference you ask? You can't tell what they are doing on their phone. Obviously the tiny screen makes it easy for kids to play games without a teacher knowing. Teachers can easily monitor what the kids are doing on computers.
This is typed on an ipad so iapologise for-any mistakes.
Should cell phone usage be allowed in school?

I agree with you on this envoy...i mean kids can't make their own decisions and they will play games on their phone instead of doing work...i use to play games on the computer instead of doing work at school all the time...and yes people do depend on their phones to much...i can live with out mine...i done it alot of times because i grew up without one and i hate that people can get ahold of me at any time...but school is not about socializing so phones don't mean anything at school...but like i said i needed my phone for astronomy so i needed then

Should we also ban pencils and pens because you can stab people with them?

No, but only because the benefits outweigh the risks. If there are literally no benefits whatsoever to mobile phones then the potential for abuse is a valid reason for banning them. Likewise, if humanity somehow does away with all forms of written communication it will be sensible to ban sharp objects like pencils from school grounds.

Should we allow videocameras in school?
Unlike a phone, pencils are an essential part of schooling and can't be replaced. It is silly to ignore the difference and start generalizing.
If you're that afraid of pens and pencils, why would you want even introduce more things tht canlead to bullying?

By your logic why have laws at all? They don't completely stop crime, so therefore they are pointless? So if you don't have a permanent solution to solve a problem you should just ignore it and allow it to continue? I am quite aware that the rules will be broken, but in my opinion it is better to minimize the damage then to let it spread. And do you really think that by removing the ban it will stop "devious ways" of cyberbullying? Or do you consider the conspicuous bullying less tragic?
Currently I see a ban (during school times) as a means to deal with the problem, but if you come up with a better solution then I'm all ears. But what i see is you don't have one, and saying "this can be achieved through other means" are just words with no weight.
