This is my entry for a writing competition taking place here in Ireland. I have been struggling to think about anything to write since the day I decided to enter the competition (Just my luck) and I came up with this the day before it had to be turned in.
I got the idea from our history class on the Ulster Plantations, as this fairly bloody event is a significant one in Irish history.
Enjoy! :D
Dark Heart
I urge to you, oh black-hearted King
How many more must we kill before you give?
I pledged my very life and kissed your ring
To how many more must we deny the right to live?
I cry to you, oh black-hearted Liege
Why must we kill them when their weapons lie?
We broke their spirits with our fearsome siege
How many more innocents must die?
I plead to you, oh black hearted Master
How much more blood must bathe the streets we stalk?
We cannot dig the graveyards any faster
Was this blood for trade with terror in Dundalk?
I beg of you, oh black-hearted Bigot,
Why must we slaughter and kill when we have won?
We looted them, every ring, band and bracelet
When will the battle truly be done?
I beseech of you, oh black-hearted Soldier
How many more must die before our hands!?
How hot the hatred in your soul must smoulder
How much more will die upon these lands?
I ask of you, oh black-hearted Satan
How long did you think we’d obey?
Drogheda’s avengers lie in waiting
Oh Lord Cromwell, you’ve a blood debt to pay.
