From what I've been reading in the written section of this, it looks like fear is a very real thing when it comes to the gorier writers!
As far as being outmatched goes though, I think it's a good push to get you going. Once you're in the mindset of "I'm going to get ripped apart", you get some really solid motivation to bust your butt on your match!
I would think the opposite actually. If you already thinking that you're going to lose horribly then you may lose motivation all together. If you think that you're guaranteed to lose then you may also think that there's no point in trying.

If somebody challenges, just accept it and enjoy yourself, it doesn't matter who you're up against.
It's a hobby, you do it because you like doing it, not to act like some sort of veteran fighter or newbie. We're all lifeless idiots with too much time on our hands at the end of the day.
Even if it's the best animator in the world you should go and show the best you got, without fear or something, even with hopes to actually win, most of RHGs battles results are determinates by the attitude you have while you're making it.
