One of the big drawbacks in the game, imo, is the giant spammers. At times, this basically leads to a stalemate, where the person trapped with three tower archers cannot take the middle form someone with the ghost enslaved giant, but the person with the center cannot destroy their statue because with three archers and a decent player, it basically creates a stalemate.
Some solutions to this setup would include allowing people to differentiate units. For instance, I would gladly have my enslaved giant do less damage for greater throwing range. Other people have made suggestions or pointed out the need for some variety in the game. Of late, 90% of people I play take one strategy/approach. Sometimes, you cannot muster enough forces before they turtle down... and the game becomes a bore/chore.
