Ok so this one's been bumming me for quite sometime, so lets see what the majority think! Do you think going to art school makes a better animator or do you think self taught animators have the edge?

Art school -----> better construction, follow the style given by teacher
Self taught ----> A bit floppy at the beggining, then develop his own style and become different than the other animators.

Self Taught FTW (as I do)

universities can suck my dick.

i dropped out of multimedia systems after one year because i wasn't learning anything i couldn't have taught myself for free, on the internet, in half the time.

Self taught tend to develop more unique styles, while people that goes to art schools often follow their teachers a little too much and the style gets too unoriginal.

Self taught is my recommendation.

Well if you go to animation school you could learn a lot. Having people with experience and a good learning environment can be really help you develop your skills... and I don't get why people are saying school makes you "unoriginal".. it really doesn't.. they just teach you essentials usually and they usually have like a big final project where they let you do whatever you want =S. Also they do give you critiques.. idk what ppl here are talking about lol. It can basically be a shortcut to learning many new things... like a science student going to chem class vs just reading a textbook on your own. It provides a structured way of learning everything and I think they do it pretty well

I'd say the problem with a lot of animation schools though is a lot of them start off assuming you know nothing since most of the students that do it don't know anything. So people that already know stuff might have to sit through stuff they already know especially if the course is only like a year or two.. then your learning is really crammed... although, you can never learn everything so it's still useful even if you know it... And another problem is it's incredibly expensive.... it costs even more than most universities so I hear.. I've never been to an animation school so I wouldn't knoww...

Anyway.. just don't get cocky cause you "animate" already and you think you already know all there is to know. For most of you I would think animation school would be incredibly useful.

Being self-Taught, in my opinion, is better because it helps you invent and create your own style.

did you not just see what Miccool (I) posted?

Animation school =/= ruining your originality/creativity

hell, look at all the "self taught animators" of NG a large portion of them look like Oney or Egoraptor ripoffs for the most part. Its not eh school that stifles originality, its the person who lets themself become some cheap knockoff.

EDIT: also, a large part of going to college for many art related studies is to build connections. I would say its a lot easier to become a successful animator because of school connections than "self-teaching" yourself and having to go out on your own to get a job in the industry with no name or recognition.

EDIT again: another thing just hit me, what is the point of having a "unique" animating style when the majority of an animators job is to conform the the lead artist/animators style (with respect to studios and larger scale projects)? Just asking.

Remember when you first watched Hyun's and Terkoiz's tutorials? You didn't learn that yourself, and to me, that counts in one way as being educated to animate.
Being taught about animation (or almost anything) will usually give a lot better results for the person than if they learned everything on their own.

I started as self taught because we had to make an animation for some unit in computer science so I made a stickman maze and then after that I started going onto youtube specifically Flyingpanda & Terkoiz and it just spiraled up from there, oh joined stickpage shortly after

I'm not sure I understand why self-taught is inherently better than being formally taught at a university, other than the monetary costs. Going to an animation school isn't going to stifle your creativity -- if it does, you probably didn't have that much to begin with. Self-taught animators seem more vulnerable, not less, to falling into the trap of copying another's style, simply because they don't have a solid grasp of the medium's foundations and look to other people's animations for guidance.

Animation schools also have the benefit of setting up connections with other people in the field, and connections are pretty fuckin nice to have when degrees are starting to matter less and less.

Your experience might have been more towards the negative end than the norm.
