A specific gem in the hilt of his blade that corresponds with the form he's in will shine and his hair and eyes will mimic the shade as well. I can edit in a list of the colors if it's needed.

Quick question: Do the gems in the sword actually do anything? How would they react if you forced energy through them? Does the type of the energy matter?

The gems in his sword are essentially the cores of his elemental essence. They hold the elemental powers he was initially born with and are unlimited in power. You can channel energies through them but there would be no way of controlling the outburst of elemental force.
