You failed to see the point I was making. There is (in my honest opinion) NOTHING even slightly scary about Dead Space 3. Try some of the levels in Psychonauts, LoZ: Majora's Mask, Ib, Witch's House, things like that.

Horror is on one hand the gory and disturbing scenes, which Dead Space definitely has (Just search for the intro of Dead Space 2 on youtube). On the other hand it is the scary aspect which makes a game "horror". And to be honest, (maybe spoiler) I first thought the undead-lady-girlfriend was pretty scary, and all the necromorphs also gave me the creeps at first.

And I realize now you were talking about Dead Space 3 ..... So just ignore this entire post if you want :)

I'm pretty sure Majora's Mask is just creepy, but isn't really a horror. And It only scared me once when I was staring at a picture of a hanging man and his started glowing red. O.o

Silent hill Homecoming
Silent hill downpour
Silent hill 4 *Door*

No I'm sorry, that's not a horror game. Go play 2 and 3 which are basically better versions of Downpour and Homecoming respectively.

  1. Slender (both classic version and modded maps) - can't really call it horror, but it definitely has the surprise factor. Best part of it, the music and footsteps. Besides, jumpscares occur very often.
  2. SCP Containment Breach - same as Slender, only with louder shouts and nastier masks.
  3. Candles - now this one is a bit different compared to the two above, it has an atmosphere of itself, very dark, tense and eerie.
  4. Cry of Fear - only used to play this with friends, never alone. Guess you could call me a pussy, but God damn those fucking screamers I'll never play it again.
  5. The Suffering - this is the game I started my horror adventure with. Launched it for the first time when I was 7 and I can't remember much, but what I DO remember is that I used to have nightmares for weeks. Sheesh.
  6. Condemned: Criminal Origins: a more recent one; though there aren't many monsters or satanic siblings, I still like it a lot because of the long, well-thought and yet somewhat scary plot. Watch out for them corners!
  7. Amnesia: The Dark Descent - need I say anything about this? No, fuck that. I mean it's Amnesia man.
  8. Dead Space series: HOLY MOTHER OF ALL HORROR GAMES THIS IS BLISS~

The list can go on and on, but I'll stop here for now.

  • I´m going to play Condemned: Criminal origins soon and I will tell you what I thought of it. I saw there was a Condemned 2, is this a sequel or are it seperate stories? (Please try not to spoil anything for me)

EDIT: Played the first three chapters, at first I was pretty skeptical and laughed about most 'scares', but as I came further into the game it managed to get my attention, a few scared did work on me, but they were very random (spoiler). ----> When I checked if a door was locked or not, suddenly a head came through and disappeared again.

I finished the game by now, the ending was pretty weird and kind of cheap in my opinion, but the fighting was cool and made me laugh numerous times when the ´bad guys´ hit each other on accident :P But it wasn't really a horror game.

If you have not played Manhunt (The original version, not the crappy american one.) Then you do not know what gore, fear, darkness and thrills really are.

I've seen some footage of Manhunt gameplay, and to me it was pretty gore indeed. But it's more "horrible" than "gore" in my opinion. Dead-Space is also high in my "gore" ranking. I mean the deaths are just horrible :P

I remember seeing gameplay for Silent Hill 3 once. It looks fucked up.

You pretty much just summed up the silent hill series in one sentance. congrats!

Gore helps a horror game feel more realistic, but extra gore and blood doesn't necessarily make a horror game. I'm a little hesitant on calling the Dead Space games horror games imo. While they were good games with some short thrills, I never found the game really scary. Very gory, but not that scary, save for a few points here and there. It was suspense rather than fear if that makes any sense. Dead Space 3 was a joke.

Left4Dead isn't really horror either imo because honestly its more of a game where you just have fun shooting zombies and everything rather than being put into an atmosphere where you truly feel fear.

I don't play many Horror games since it isn't really my thing, but I did think that Amnesia, Cry of Fear Half-Life mod, Silent Hill, and Fatal Frame were pretty good Horror games.

And System Shock 2. How could I forget System Shock 2. Now THAT game was unnerving.

I don't know, system shock wasn't really a horror game in my opinion. Once you know you can kill the monsters quite easily it's more of a RPG than a horror game.
Also, I've told you previously that there are two kinds of horror games. It's just how you interpret the word 'horror'. 1: gore/horrible scenes 2: scary and unnerving like you said.

Hewitt I looked at those games, and to be honest it isn't something I'd play. There is a limit to my bad-quality acceptance. Dreadout seems pretty cool though, I might play it. Although I'm not really afraid of ghost.

Recently I've played "Scratches", it was pretty good and worth the play. Although pretty impossible without the walkthrough...
Another game I recommend to play is SCP Containment Breach. It's a very original game and very interesting.

You can see the basic information about the game about this, and also other games:
