Me and my dad tried to downgrade his new laptop to XP when he first got it, and it wouldn't let him because the hardware didn't recognize XP. But otherwise, I've had no experience

The drivers included on your XP Disk (assuming it wasn't a generic version) probably didn't match the laptop's hardware. However, it's fairly easy to go through and download and install them one by one.
I wouldn't recommend it, though, unless you actually need XP for something. Instead, I would suggest working on Vista for a bit, removing what you don't use, ect. I've managed to speed up mine quite a bit, and besides the start menu (which I plan to fix this weekend), I like how it's running. If you're willing to give Vista a shot, google "speed up vista".
If not, it's pretty simple to reinstall XP. I've never done it with a laptop designed for Vista, but unless it's a 64-bit system, it shouldn't be a problem. Google "downgrading vista to xp" and take your pick of tutorial.

well even if i don't i still think i'm going to reboot my laptop,
but if i don't have the vista install disc anymore. but tell me this
if i was to mabey come across it and mabey burn it to a disc then used that to load it up on my laptop would that work?
and if not and i do have to buy it :( should i just get basic?
cause i plan on having, basicly all of CS3( photo shop, flash, and ect)
and plan to record, produce music and such with it so i dont want it to be shit.
im also going to upgrade it to at least 1 possibly 1.5-2 gigs of ram and get a brand new sound card and graphics card.

Where did you buy this laptop from? I wouldn't suggest running Vista on any less than 1 GB of RAM, and you'll need even more for what you're planning to use it for.
My advice: save that kind of work for a Desktop computer unless you plan to shell out some decent cash (at least $1000 if you buy it premade from Dell or Gateway)
Also, a burned Vista disk should work if you set it up right. If it's from a dealer (like Dell or Gateway), it may have some protection that prevents you from running it on machines other than theirs. Also, unless you get one from your exact model, it'll be missing almost all of your drivers. It takes a little time, but it's doable and usually fairly simple to install them yourself.
If you bought the laptop legitimately from a vendor and its still under warranty, contact them. They're usually more than happy to send you new disks.
If you decide to buy Vista (last resort. If you don't get Vista for free, I would say stick with XP...) get basic. The things you want to do will rely mostly on hardware, not the OS. However, to decide which version you want, read this.

yeah i'm fine for now, when it comes time to get a new computer i will invest in a desktop because its easier and also cheaper then a laptop of equal or lesser performance.
