I saw it yesterday. I don't really get what's so good about this movie.
I guess the graphics are cool, the soundtrack as well, but everything is so fucking predictable:

possible spoilers (Click to Show)

No real originality, no innovation. It looked like another commercial movie, with no taste and no surprise.

Fair point, not much originality, and the plot could be better and possibly more in-depth to make it less predictable, but the scenes and fights were still actually entertaining. Perhaps if you could go pass the blatant similarities with every other American action movie and pretend as if it was the first action movie ever made, maybe that'll ease you up?

If you are trying to give a review of the movie, it's a shitty review. If this is simply your thoughts, then I would say you are misguided. You are trivializing the fact that the movie has one of the best visuals up to date, in which the makers clearly put alot of heart and detail into.

And do you realise that not every movie is supposed to have some kind of complex and twisted plot like Citizen Kane? If you went into this movie expecting such from a ROBOTS vs MONSTERS movie, even after watching their trailers (in which it clearly advertises that its core focus is not on the narrative), you must be one ignorant individual. The selling point of Pacific Rim is its action and its visuals, pure and simple. You go into that movie, switch off your brain, and admire the set pieces and the large scale action put in front of you. And when these two factors outdo the plot, you can definitely have a good movie.

Define originality and innovation. And I have no idea what you mean by taste? How would one interpret taste in film? In this time and age, "originality" is rare when it comes to story. But I fail to see how the overall execution of the movie fails. Rather then having an expectation that every movie should be as revolutionary as the first star wars movie, observe how the overall movie is presented. Django Unchained is barely an original movie. It has a cliche plot of a damsel in distress yet somehow manages to gain near universal acclaim. And was this due to its plot? No, it was a result of the dialogue and the acting, which were the strong points of its movie which made it stand out. In this case it is Pacific Rim's action choreography and visuals that make it unique. The origniality and innovation, comes from the design of the Jaeger, monsters, environment, etc.

Plot is not everything, it is the execution. And how Guillermo del Toro executed a Robot versus Monster movie was absolutely fine if not great. You are judging this movie according to your own expectations (which you shouldn't), rather you should focus on what the movie is, or trying to achieve.

With that said, does that mean you should not criticize the movie. By no means. You just should not base your entire impression of a movie with a single criteria.

I honestly liked this movie, mostly because it isn't trying to be dark or gritty or edgy -- just fun, plain and simple. The visuals are colorful and exciting, it has a cheesy but endearing moral (teamwork + giant robot fists > Godzilla children) and it tried to craft a unique world without getting too lengthy, which is pretty impressive considering not a whole lot of movies have attempted to create a new fantasy setting since Avatar. It wasn't a sequel or a reboot, which is fucking amazing in itself considering most CGI orgythons nowadays are sequels or reboots. To its credit, there was a hell lot more narrative than I thought there'd be, so that was a nice surprise, even if it was borderline cliche.

I don't hold the movie's corniness against it, because that's what gives it its charm. Sure, it wasn't a great movie, and I probably won't be scrambling for the DVD release, but I don't think every single movie has to check off having "good taste" or being original. That's goddamn silly. It was an action movie that was over-the-top without being overly satirical, silly without being irritating and cheesy without being unwatchable. Going to see Pacific Rim for a riveting story and angsty drama is about the same as going to go see Grown Ups 2 and expecting intellectual humor -- you will walk out of the theatre very disappointed.

I loved the movie. The Kaijū remind me of Sin from Final Fantasy X. I suspect many people watched the movie to see Rinko Kikuchi.
