I've been gaming since I was about 5. My first game was wolfenstein 3d for mac, and I played that shit like every day for hours on end. I moved on to other things. C&C, Rayman, pretty much any game you can think of. I then moved on to even more hardcore stuff. by the time I was 10, i owned a ps2, psp, all the game consoles and shit, and I was gaming pretty much all the time. Funnily enough, gaming didn't really impede any progress I made with real people (socially), but that's a different point entirely.

Anyway, In 2007 shit got really serious. As some of you hardcore folks may well know, that was one of the best years ever for gaming, and so any time that I had that wasn't spent skating and fucking around with my friends was spent in my room, gaming my life away. Then it got to a whole new stage in 2009/10. I discovered MMO's. Eve online and WoW, (6 months of each) and then I spent the next year catching up on all the games I had missed during that year. Arguably 2009/10 was really the worst. So, 2011, 2012 where pretty intense as well. My steam library now measures up to 60 games, which isn't that much because I pirated practically ever game I have since 2011. I keep them all in three seperate hard drives (250GB, 500GB and 1 TB, respectively measuring up to around 1750GB's of games, which is a lot) I do not endorse this at all because it takes money away from people who work hard for it. (that's an argument for another time)

Right, so at the beginning of this year, I sat down (metaphorically) and thought about quite how much of my life I have spent playing video games. I don't want to make a guess because I'm terrified at what I'll get. I know I spent about 1000 hours on COD 4 and probably more on those mmo's, but I'd rather not think about how much the combined total comes out to.

And so here I am, a walking gaming encyclopedia that knows far too much information about gaming and can do nothing with it - I don't want to go into the gaming industry, so I have no use of this gargantuan sum of gaming related information I lug around with me.

And then I realised I was bored of gaming. Not in that sense - I still play video games (mostly LoL now) but rarely more than 3 hours a day. And the weird thing is, because I've played practically every game to come out in the last 4 years in ever single genre (apart from stuff on the wii, I don't fuck with that weird ass shit) I have nothing left to play. And when new games come out, I just get bored because I feel as if I've gone through it before. The only games to come out recently that I truly enjoyed playing where Dishonoured (because of it's different art style and smooth ass swordplay and the fact you can play the entire game without killing anyone, something which hasn't actually been done since Deus Ex), Far Cry 3 (because there's nothing better than a well made sandbox game), Metro: Last Light (It was perfectly scary, well paced and so beautiful that I cried whenever I looked at anything) and the walking dead series (for obvious reasons). That's it. Really.

Quite frankly I don't know if i even enjoy gaming at all anymore. I didn't like the last of us, even though I realise it's a beautifully crafted game that deserves all the praise it gets, and I didn't even like Bioshock Infinite, simply because it was a sequel and it felt too linear. (I can hardly bear playing linear games anymore) so even though I appreciate how good it is, I just got bored of it.

Anyway, sorry about the rant, it's 3 in the morning here so I felt like doing something weird. What do you guys think?

I think you need to play some indie games.

No seriously, maybe you're just sick of the traditional mainstrea trend of games today. You need to go back to some roots, relive the games of yore or maybe experiment in genres you never thought existed.

You said you dont wanna go into the gaming industry. Maybe you should turn your knowledge into an outlet. Set up a blog and write reviews, game design mechanics (patterns you notice in each game), random rants. Get it out of your system even if its not for any benefit. In the meatime, find something else to fill your void.

You could download Dolphin and pick up a few games for the Wii via torrents or something and see if you like it. If you're that bored, you never know...

yeah that's actually a pretty good idea. I'm actually gonna start that. KKB did a thing like that a while ago, worked for him so should work for me. thanks bro

I have. I've become the biggest film geek ever, which has actually been a really good experience.

Sounds like an excuse, if you really wanted to quit, you would. I mean, if you only LoL for three hours or less now, it's not even that big of a deal. Seems like the whole rant itself just really strung out.

Anyhow, if you want a pretty damn good challenge, do this:

DL S.T.A.L.K.E.R and try to beat this mod.

This sounds like a pretty good idea. Maybe start a YouTube channel, and review any games that are on the market, or will be on the market soon with your current game knowledge. You could also review hardware, engines, gameplay, etc.

wow thats pretty cool, I played chernobyl and clear skies but I never modded them. Russians make sick post apocalyptic games. i might try playing them again sometime with that mod, sounds pretty awesome

Yeah but the thing is, its the fact that I find games boring now that really pisses me off. I can't enjoy them any more, and that kind of upsets me. The whole gaming addiction thing was bad, but I also really enjoyed gaming back then. I wish I could do that now because I want to play games like bioshock infinite and tomb raider and really enjoy them, and not just play them because I feel as if I should.

take a break, chief. i don't game until it's winter, spring/summer/fall are all meant for outside shit, hanging with people, and just being social. i only recluse during the winter months to game because it's cold as fuck outside and boring. i was in your situation once my middle-school years, then i became more social, focused less on games, and more on my friends/hobbies at the time. every year when i recluse to game, because i've taken a strong hiatus from it, there's always new shit for me. not sure how well that will work out for you, but it worked out pretty well in my favor. not saying you shouldn't game all year, but just give it a break for a bit.

also yeah, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R mods are dope as fuck. dl L.U.R.K when you get the chance, it over-hauls the system, and a bunch of new shit, and keeps things pretty interesting. still in dev too, so expect to see more shit further on down the road. also, for the stalkersoup, that shit is hard as fuck. so if you decide to give it a chance, be warned: it is rage inducing.

you're right. I think I'm going to stop for a while, write a blog about gaming or something. Tbh my social life is pretty active. I hang out with people and do standard teenager shit. Gaming never really influenced my social life, and I think it's mainly because if you met me you would never think of me as a gamer.

haha i'm definetly gonna try that shit, I love a challenge. Super meat boy was my shit, purely because it was so rage inducing. Staying calm and not breaking anything is actually 50% of the work.

I myself have a thread on another forums where I just spend a day to talk about a random indie game I found. Only about 2-4 people read it on a regular basis but I don't care. To me it's nice those people get to know about it. And in some ways, it acts as release for my inhibitions towards indie games.

(btw if you wanna see this awesome thread I'll link it)

You're definitely not alone on this. I'm not gonna try to explain myself because it's basically the same story as yours. But I used to own an N64, Ps2, and Xbox. Eventually it bogged down to just a 360, and then eventually I just sold it because I was done.

What these guys are suggesting to you are good ideas. However, the fact you're getting outright bored of video gaming could be a sign. It might not be that games are just becoming repetitive, unchallenging, and too predictable due to experience. You're probably just growing older and your mind has developed more where you look at the big picture. It's the same with me, whenever I play a video game now I look at what I'm doing and just see a TV screen. I can't hold myself on a video game for more than a half hour now. And if I ever play a video game it's for one of two reasons: Inspiration to write stores, or to fuck around with my friends.

What I'm trying to get at is that this is probably a good thing (which I'm sure you already noticed.) Maybe it is time for you to put your interests elsewhere. Maybe all that video gaming was just a direction of what you might be interested in, like graphics, 3D, animation (this is an animation site), storyline, anything really. Plus I think now is as good of a time as any to start thriving on different things while holding that social side of your life that you and I have both held up well throughout our gaming years. If you want me to be honest, video gaming is such an ever-changing industry that's going just as fast as technology in our society is moving that trying to make a career or living out of it would just end up on a crash course like the home phone. It's one of those things that are best used as casual time-passers rather than an every day thing to look forward to.
