Name: Pixel & Bits
Status: TEMPORARILY AVAILABLE
Queue: SJCRPV (a challenge has also been issued to Wyrmspawn)
Abilities: Pixel carries a book of spells which contains an array of elemental attacks and buff/debuff skills. The blue orb inside the staff she wields is the conduit for these powers. Bits, conversely, can transform his arms and legs into a variety of technological wonders, his favorite of which is a mining drill. Being essentially video game characters, Pixel & Bits are harmed by the same amount no matter where they are hit, and show no visible signs of exhaustion or battle damage other than "flashing red" when near death. Their interlinked code allows them to know the other's location and thoughts, with a side effect described further below. They also respawn after being killed, but not to where they last died, making this more of an explanation as to how they keep coming back than an actual battle technique.
Pixel's Weaknesses: Pixel has only moderate skill at close-range combat, and cannot cast spells without her staff, meaning she's helpless if her weapon is stolen. Only her weakest spells can be activated instantly, with charge times for more powerful effects ranging from a few seconds to several minutes, a quality which can make or break a battle. And as you might guess, she can only hit targets she's actually aiming at.
Bits' Weaknesses: Bits' transformation sequences are flashy and distracting, but also time-consuming, leaving him vulnerable to a particularly-aggressive opponent. Although he's naturally three times as strong as Pixel and twice as sturdy, his armor actually does nothing to protect his body. He can also only transform one body part at a time, with whatever weaknesses that entails. Further transformation hurts him if sustained for too long.
Common Weaknesses: A smart opponent can take advantage of their overzealous moves and trick them into accidentally attacking each other. Powerful magnetic fields scramble their code and cause them to become incapacitated due to glitching. The same effect occurs when they are physically separated by more than about 20 feet, as a drawback of their interlinked code.
Personality: Pixel & Bits are thrill-seekers by nature. To them, no risk is too great, no enemy is too fearsome and no goal is too lofty when it comes to adventure. Their social skills are rather lacking, however, since the only language they truly speak is the language of battle. Bits is often protective of Pixel due to her wizardly squishiness, and despite their recklessly-violent behaviour, they both become worried and finicky when the other is hurt. As gladiators go, they aren't exactly the cream of the crop, but any would-be opponents would be wise to not underestimate their uncanny tendency to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
Appearance: Pixel has the appearance of a stout, curvy young woman with light skin, blue eyes, pointy ears and long brown hair. She wears a purple robe with white fur trim, as well as a matching wizard hat and a pair of brown boots. Bits is a large, squarish android with a spherical head and glowing green eyes. His orange-painted armor has large screws and rivets for visual effect, with diagonal yellow and black stripes around his wrists, ankles, and the brim of his helmet. Despite this attention to detail, however, the number of colors on their bodies is limited to 256, their movements are somewhat jerky, and their actions are accompanied by short computerized sound effects. In general, it's as if they're running at a lower quality and framerate than the world at large.
Story: Pixel and Bits come from a bygone age - the early 90s, when boy bands were just becoming a thing and SEGA wanted the whole world to know that Genesis did what Nintendidn't. Nobody knows how - was it science? Magic? Something else entirely? - but somehow, what began as random code assembled itself into something that was, for lack of a better word, alive. They're new on the wRHG scene, but Pixel & Bits are looking to make a name for themselves, and are willing to take on all challengers with their rather unique brand of team combat. Besides, fighting is just what video game characters do.
It's said that every good story begins in a drinking establishment. Now, Pixel & Bits weren't exactly physically capable of downing a pint like normal people, but that didn't stop them from waltzing in anyway.
The bar (...slash grill) was a fairly typical place, all things considered. The inside would remind one of coffee, but of two different kinds, as the ceiling was a dim beige, but the walls were a shiny black. Five glossy wooden tables sat arranged in the middle, as if some compulsive stranger had insisted they resemble the five side of a die. Along the walls were a number of booths, each meticulously labeled with a number. What wasn't ordinary was its clientele. You see, the Tooth and Claw was a popular watering hole for fighters in the wRHG, and as a result, it was a prime brawling location for up-and-comers who had something to prove.
As Bits walked toward the bar, with an electronic imitation of whirring hydraulics sounding with every step, the eight-foot-tall orange android naturally attracted some attention. The Tooth and Claw catered to all types. Swordsmen, gunfighters and elementals all had their favorite spots, and the occasional freak or two would drop by as well. Nobody would bat an eyebrow at a cyborg, but a full-on robot wasn't exactly a typical bar-goer, even by wRHG standards.
As her hulking partner turned heads away from the door, Pixel quietly meandered in behind him. She preferred to be the type to catch people by surprise, as opposed to Bits' blunt, in-your-face display of mechanical muscle. It was better to let the big guy do his thing and let the shock wear off faster. They weren't there to fight, per se. They were there to scope out the competition. If the situation somehow... escalated, all the merrier.
But as it turned out, a certain patron sitting with his lackeys in one of the booths had turned his eyes to Pixel instead.
“Well, howdy, sweetheart,” the man uttered. Pixel turned to look. He wasn't exactly a stallion, even if he did appear to fancy himself one in his black suit and blood-red tie. His face was obscured by a large black cowboy hat, but his case of five o'clock shadow was more than clear.
“Name's Bull. What's yours?”
Pixel didn't respond. Even if she'd had the inclination to, which she certainly didn't, her muteness made effective communication difficult with anyone other than Bits. Unfortunately, her immediate dislike for this “Bull” person didn't appear to register to him, as he continued to try and get her attention.
“Hey! I asked you a question! You gonna answer me or what?” As Bull said this, he reached for his possible namesake: A black leather bullwhip hanging on the wall nearby. When Pixel didn't answer him a second time, he decided to get her attention the wRHG way... which was possibly the dumbest mistake he could've made.
As the whip trailed toward Pixel, she instinctively blocked it by holding her staff horizontally in front of her. Once it had wrapped its way around the staff's shaft, she did the one thing nobody else ever seemed to do and gave it a yank. The whip flew out of Bull's hand and was sent halfway across the room, barely missing a precariously-perched glass of champagne.
Without missing a beat, Bull produced a knife from a pouch on his belt and came out swinging, but Pixel was ready for him. Lowering her staff down to stomach level, she unleashed a gust of wind from its tip. Bull was launched into the wall, then fell down onto the booth's table, cracking the plates and glasses under his weight. Pixel had had enough of this self-righteous poser. She brought her staff down on his back with a sickening crack.
The room went dead silent, save for the whispers of “ooh” and “that looks painful”.
The sound of guns being cocked suddenly rang through the air. Bull's two henchman were ready to avenge their boss's honor. Pixel dropped her staff to the floor and raised her arms. She was in trouble now. Or rather, she would've been, if the commotion hadn't allowed Bits ample time to get into position.
The henchmen's guns were abruptly yanked out of their grip. Bits deactivated his electromagnet attachment, causing the weapons to fall right next to Pixel's staff before they were crushed flat by the technological titan's massive feet. Bits' eyes narrowed angrily. How quickly tables turn. The men found themselves being picked up by a pair of steel arms. Before they knew it, their heads had collided and they were out cold.
Bits dropped the bodies onto the booth's bench. Pixel retrieved her staff. When the duo at last took notice of their audience, they took the time to bow. With that, they turned and walked out the door, leaving everyone in a state of bewilderment.
This was a fun place. They'd be sure to return.
