btw, I'm pretty sure that there were no christians here that posted to mock your celebrations.

Anyways Eid Mubarak. Can anyone translate for me the literal meaning of this? Is it the name of the holiday itself or is it just a greeting? I'm confused.

Eid is the actual name of the holiday, Mubarak means "blessed". So like "May your holiday be blessed".

Eid means 'feast' in arabic, doesn't it? So I'm assuming thats the context here too. So Eid Al Fitr which happened earlier this year would be Feast after the Fast (?) and Eid Al Adha would be Feast after Sacrifice. I'm assuming this is true, based on random conversations when I was in Malaysia.

Huh, so I misunderstood the meaning. I thought it was about a political celebration where a guy named "Eid Mubarak" (son of the other Mubarak) would go cross-country and greet everyone along the way.

Well, you learn something new everyday.

So why do you think people go around saying "Eid Mubarak" to each other if it was a guy's name. During Christmas people don't go around saying "Jesus of Nazreth" to each other.

The ambiguity of this holiday is cracking me up. I don't know if you kids haven't been paying attention in Muslim School or if you genuinely don't know what's up with your religion. It's like "Presents?! Giving?! What is this Christmas Spirit you keep talking about??!!"

So wait no one here really knows what it's about but they acted offended by the negative remarks? Is that even allowed?

Honestly though this thread is a good thought, but putting it here would be like trying to go to Some dank Afrocan tribe and explaining to them about all great things like Christmas, God, and democracy.

Oh my god for crying out loud people.
Let set things straight and stop posting your retarded views on what this holiday is.
Simply, Eid Al Adha literally translates into Festival of Sacrifice. You sacrifice livestock and distribute most of it to the poor. You also give Zakat (Chairty). That's it, simple and clear. Anyone who disagrees with this or posts anything that is not related about what this Eid is should go and check if they're really Muslim, because obviously you all lack basic knowledge about your beliefs which is unfortunate.

sorry but terrorising wasn't the best word to use right there smile. i have no idea if you implied something or not. hopefully not. it may just be me......
Salt is completely correct. On Eid al adha we sacrifice a lamb to commemorate what happened with abraham and his son.
in simplicity he was told to sacrifice him and at last moment a lamb and ismael (abrahams son) was switched with the lamb so instead the lamb was sacrificed.
Got it?
Now it turns out i ended up with getting £50 at the end of the day from aunts which doesnt really happen to me on Eid al Adha but what ever :P
