Ahem, i know this is a bit late, but does Every SINGLE FRAME have to have some change in the background? Or can it be something like: The stickfigures are fighting in a place with frequent earthquakes, but the ground doesn't shake all the time.
Can this be?

I think the BG change doesn't have to be shown every single frame. The important thing is you have to make them constant - not all the time, could be every 2-3 combos for example. Thus, the earth doesn't need to shake everytime.
Hope I've answered it right.
