I started watching the first 10 minutes of Bakemonogatari. I had to stop because my girlfriend is a bitch and decided she needed to leave right as I was developing some sense of the overall plot (which is kind of hard to grasp so far, but I'm only 10 minutes in so whatevs) and doesn't want me to watch it without her. I am concerned about how much fanservice there is going to be, given that the opening shot is a panty shot. Also do I need to watch the prequel movie to this before I can understand it? The opening pantyshot is actually a joke. In the novel, Araragi spend over an entire page describing the panties, which was supposed to be funny. However, there is fanservice. Early on, Senjougahara goes to Araragi's house and takes a shower, and then comes out in her underwear or something (Maybe all the way unclothed and then starts dressing, can't remember) without giving a shit. It's not like a cliche scene, because she does it on purpose and keeps her cool. It was actually an awesome scene. Also, there is fanservice of Nadeko which I recall, and of Hanekawa towards the end.
EDIT: Oops, the aforementioned scene actually takes place at Senjougahara's house, but whatever, minor detail.

I didn't find it overwhelming, and am having a hard time remembering specific points since I watched it a while ago, but I know it would be different for normalfags. There aren't pantyshots and embarrassing shit everywhere, but there are scenes where girls don't have much clothing.

The prequel movie hasn't been released yet. Also, I'm glad you got the 1080p release.

The second season, currently airing, actually has distracting fanservice so far, so you might not want to watch that one with your girlfriend even if you can tolerate this one.

Oh I don't have a problem watching shit with fanservice in it with her. I just generally find things with fanservice don't hold my attention because I'm more interested in plot and character development rather than what some chick looks like without clothes (I got over that phase when I was in highschool). For example I cannot watch Highschool Of The Dead partly because of how much fucking fanservice there is. As long as the fanservice doesn't outweigh the plot and characters I have no problems.

Also am I supposed to be able to read the shit that appears on screen? I kind of feel retarded because I just get a flash of it and I wasn't able to read anything before it vanished. So far though it's really fucking stylistic and pretty, which I like. The way it's presented is enjoyable, despite the quick cuts. I just want to make sure that I'm going to be able to understand the plot and not be 3 episodes in and realize that I don't fucking know what the shit is going on.

The only good anime was Gundum Wing. Fuck you all.
