Teen Titans was a comic originally, and the 'original' show itself was a watered-down version of that to make it appropriate for kids. The comic book had quite a few very adult themes.

EDIT: Don't get me wrong I love the show too, but still, there's nothing wrong with spin-offs just by default.

Teen Titans was a good show. It's been forever since they've aired it though.
