If done right, it wouldn't sacrifice very much unit control. When said champ is selected, bind the arrow keys to his movement. It sacrifices a little bit of map control, but you could still move the screen other ways.
It would remain selected if you pressed the space bar, or clicked on the ground, or other units. Deselect by clicking on it again.
essentially what I'm thinking of is it being controlled individually while you control the rest with your mouse.

Attacking is the hard part, NumPad0 would work I guess.

True, there are other ways to navigate the map, but I personally have to disagree.
In my opinion, the arrow keys should remain to scroll the map for fine tuning.

Maybe an alternative could be to implement a hotkey that only selects the champion (like "C" for example)?!

Now, as for the champion ideas...:

Meric Champion (Click to Show)

Another idea linked to this: What about resistances? I just wondered how it would be if units could gain specific resistances like Charrogs and Fires could be immune to burn damage (at least the Champion versions of them).
Thus, instant kill attacks like a Shadowrath's Cloak ability level 2 or Medusa's stone face wouldn't kill magic using champions, but only weaken them.
Good idea or bad idea?

The only reliable counter to order mages are ninjas and stone face (and V, I suppose, but that's not really affected here) so to remove that weakness makes them unapproachable.

Besides, chaos spellcasters (and deads) are pretty resistant to poison already, I've very rarely seen them die from that. And charrogs are armoured, they don't take much damage from DoT in general so they're pretty much "resistant".

EDIT: Not poison, what I meant was they don't get insta-killed by shinobi level 2.

With charrogs though, there is no easy way for you to recycle them like order spears and chaos juggs. Charrogs take way too long healing in base to recover and using a water to heal them costs, reducing the benefit of reusing tanks considerably.

I wasn't talking about recycling them in the first place.

Waters cost money, so don't use them? In mid-game cost efficiency isn't a big deal as your economy is at it's peak. if you're good enough you wouldn't have just one charrog, I've been using waters and charrogs and they work just fine for me, just use a high damaging unit like an air and you should be fine. Well, maybe my counter arguement isn't that good, but I've reached the top 50 using CHairs, which includes a combination of using charrogs and waters for tanking, which you claim isn't as effective as trees.
