Actually they get a bit more range than you think... You can hit a Target at 40 yards away with a 12 gauge shotgun (not the best accuracy) but you can as proven personally by me... And they don't really "kill" anyone. They prefer put a knife and a threatening note to an enemy's (usually High-ranked) pillow, Which means they will kill that one if their conflicts with the assassin doesn't settled.
