Theres a place near me who paid people to graffiti up the buildings he owned, but he only allowed true experts to do it. It looks a lot better then it would of before, and it really brightens up the place.

Graffiti is a sort of art, but most of the time it is painted on forbidden canvases.

....Specifics on the types of graffitti, please? Like already said, there's the mindless gang signs/tags in places you don't want to see them, then there's stuff like a Monopoly board spray-painted on the side of a subway car I would LOVE to see.
Speaking of the subways, that's where I see the majority of all graffiti. Half the empty tunnels under NYC are sprawling with graffiti, I see it all the time now. Even the "scratchitti" on windows, it's rather sad to see. It's been abused as an art form so much, it doesn't even catch my attention.

Reiterating on subways, I'm kinda thinking back to the '70's, when it was said that the graffitti was so bad, entire cars were sometimes covered in such tags. The last real artful piece of graffitti I saw was a 9/11 tribute on the side of a pizza shop on Kingsbridge. We need more nice stuff like that around.

I think it depends, if maybe it was a nice detailed picture on the side of a building that the owner paid for or even if it was just a wall of a abandoned building i think it's nice.
but a gang tag or just vandalizing on a car or garage door or building i thing is rude and annoying.

Down my neighbourhood, someone had tagged 'Packie' on some people's garages. They had to repaint it.

^That's probably why people make a big deal out of it. I remembered seeing this whole wall along the side of some highway in Spain that was covered in nothing but tags.

There's an MSPaint version somewhere on YOuTube, would that suffice?

I am a graff writer and writers are different than gangbangers.

Writers paint for fun and a rush, and to express artistic nature. Gangbangers tag to mark territory. And we have rules:

1. No painting on churches/places of worship
2. No painting on personal property (houses, cars, mailboxes)
3. No painting on schools
4. No painting on graveyards
5. No painting on parks or playgrounds
6. Respect other writers, throwups go over tags, pieces go over throwups.

I choose not to vandalize small businesses, I generally only paint on things no body gives a shit about. (Rail tunnels, under bridges, totally concealed walls.)

I tag sometimes to. I hear a lot of people saying "Oh I love artistic graffiti, but I hate that tagging shit". But you just can't have that, every amazing piece of artwork you see, all the murals in the city, started with a little punk vandal. You learn your basic letter structure through your signature/tag/handstyle.

I am fully aware that alot of people hate graffiti, and I still do it because it's the one thing that I am decent at and I love it. Kinda addicted....

it's only fine if it's done on public property or if you have permission to do it on private property. Any other place is just wrong, even if it's beautiful.

The problem with graffiti is simple: people don't want it on their buildings, cars, walls or in their neighborhood. People also use graffiti to spread gang signs, thus increasing gang tension.

It's really vandalism vs. art.

Place your art on train stations then

You can do graffiti illegally? Where is this promise land you speak of?

Also, Banksy said once that if Graffiti was made legal, the world would look a lot better. Think about it, not being able to take a step without seeing some magnificent colors. Sure there would be the faggot gang signs, but they can be covered up with good works of art. A dynamic environment to live in that would change week after week. It'd be something great, waking up wondering what kind of art you're going to see today.

In a perfect world...

If graffiti was legal most people wouldn't do it.

Banksy has done one.

I'm with psilo on his list of things not to touch. I do stickers and stencils though.

Only thing I hate people say about graffiti it makes the town look bad. If it looks good I am want to go over there and see it, and there shops around the graffiti, they just made business. If I go in there and buy something.
