this is just a guess, but i think obsidium was in IRC with him and linked him to twin fantasy on youtube while coaching him to mirror his opinion (and then asked him to post ITT)
nah what am i thinking, he
totally came back from a hiatus that's lasted since 2013 to make a single inflammatory post about a fucking bandcamp album in the music thread. one that he hasn't rated on rym, either.
i don't know if either of them want to discuss the album, but i've been thinking about it.
production-wise, the reverb and distortion throughout the album is done phenomenally well. dresnet, i don't know if you've ever recorded and/or produced something yourself, but it's very difficult to strike such a perfect balance of echo and dissonance.
twin fantasy is intensely personal and basically has anthemic chorus after anthemic chorus; many of the songs have multiple passages that switch between equally well written melodies, taking you on twists and turns. namely Beach Life-in-Death, which has some of the best songwriting i've ever heard.
toledo's lyrics blend desperation, horror, and surrealism with teenage awkwardness. it's self-aware but completely serious. the album is a masterpiece of defeated passion.
i honestly think it fits into
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Sincerity
will toledo has this ability to yell with fucking
conviction yet still sound so fucking
tired --and i love it.
it's like an explosion of emotions from someone who's unconscious. twin fantasy is pure catharsis.
the album as a whole is ambitious as hell. it's almost a concept album in the way the ending songs reference and contain refrains from the beginning songs and it all has to do with the idea of your ideal lover being a manifestation of yourself.
it's a pretty special album to me, something that i'm amazed came from bandcamp. if you can't appreciate it, you're missing out.
EDIT: btw, here's
my rym, because i will acknowledge that it's unfair to criticize someone else without putting myself in the open.
seriously, i'm listening to Beach Life-in-Death and i can't put myself in the head of someone who hates this.
DO YOU HAVE ANY CRIMES THAT WE
CAN USE TO PASS THE TIME? I AM
RUNNING OUT OF DRUGS TO TRY AND I
maybe it has to do with the fact that i don't like traditionally "slick" production; i like to
feel those textures rub all over the insides of my ears. god it feels good
