This probably isn't the place to ask, but I can't really ask anywhere else. Because everywhere else is blocked by this stupid fucking cert error(including support.microsoft and google is useless).
the cert error is:
err_cert_authority_invalid
I recently installed windows XP SP3(pirated :^), and this problem, that's affecting all of the installed browsers on my pc(ie and chrome), started. I dont know why its happening, but I can't view or use sites like gmail, facebook, dropbox, sub domains of microsoft's website, github and other places I regularly visit. Usually, If I'm able to access the site, the styling/css is broken and so is its functionality. I'm really at end with this; I've tried manually updating certificates using certmgr.exe, uninstalling avast(my antivirus),rebooting my pc and a whole lotta other shit that hasn't helped at all.
any help would be appreciated

Is this a pirated copy of Windows XP SP3? I don't care if it is but it's necessary to know.

The error has to do with websites that are served via HTTPS, it means that the SSL certificate on your system couldn't be used to establish reasonable trust (a valid authority must sign the certificate) which usually is a sign of tampering, which in turn is usually a sign of some malicious software. Usually. The reason I ask about the pirated copy is it may have been bundled with bad or malicious software that is messing with the trusted certificates. Did it work fine after installing Windows XP SP3 or has it always been like this? If was working fine then that's probably not the issue.
The only other thing I can think of is that Avast did the same thing in the name of security (some antivirus programs install their own certificate on your system's trusted certificates in order to intercept HTTPS requests) and it wasn't removed when you uninstalled it. Here are some things you can try:
- Make sure date & time is set correctly
- Reinstall Avast, then uninstall it, reboot, and reinstall it again (according to my searches this generates a new root certificate)
- Check out what certificates are installed by going to Start > Run > certmgr.msc > Trusted Root Certificate Authorities > Certificates and seeing what's in there.

Well, this version came with no drivers for my PC. So I had to get the network controller drivers to access the internet. I'm not sure if anything happened before hand that affected the
certificates.
I synced the date & time with the internet and set it correctly offline too.
I'm going to try your advice with avast
I just looked at it and alot of secure email certificates and other types in that directory have expiration dates before today. Dating to 2009 and back.
Also for some reason I can't get the automatic certificate updater for XP. If I can't get it at all, I'm going to try and reinstall XP again. I have a product key for XP, as this computer came with it. But I couldn't be bothered to read that. So I got a pre-activated bloatware filled iso. But if I have to, i'll look for a clean, original XP iso and I'll just get the sp3 off of microsofts support website.
