I like the style a lot. Though I can't tell if he is facing forwards or backwards. Maybe both.

Oh yeah, it is a bit clearer in your sketch phase how the pose works. I also really like the dynamism and fluidity of your poses. It's something I've always had trouble with.

Perhaps it's the foreshortening you're missing out? The enlargement or the shortening of body.... Also it could be the line of action that you're not visualising.... urm..Why not try to observe people fighting..? Youtube have tons of those.... urm... this post is probably old .. >n>;;
