File Shredders/Hiders

What are the best file shredders and hiders out there? Freeware is best and whatever personal experiences you have with them are what I'm looking for.

a file shredder is going to shred the file, so it doesnt really matter what program you use.
and hell, the police just use a program called "file shreader", no joke, it was just a freeware program you'd download off the internet.
and for hiders, im not sure, use trucrypt for that, or just use hidden files.

Uh, can they trace yer stuff through system restore files? How do I remove 'em?
