I don't think its because shiny doesn't want to be original, maybe it is just that having your parents die at an early age is an easy way to instill a sense of ruthlessness in a character, or a sense of morals. The directions that a charachter can grow into from that kind of situation are plentiful, and as such is used often due to its versatality.

But it kinda has been overused here. I would suggest using something else.
