I agree with Prospect. But I would say personally....heh

The question asks if noONE...this word carries the connotation of a meaning people. But I'm sure that this tree isn't falling over in the middle of no where without any animals or anything. I think that it does make a sound to the animals but if you want to get technical then I agree with prsopect. Sound is human perception of the altercation of airwaves. If a tree falls, it makes what is neccessary to create sound but we cannot percieve it as such.(i basically just restated what Prospect said)

I would like to add that this why we find music enjoyable. The instrument distort the wave in may certain ways pleaseable to our ears.

:Ohhhhh:

I looked up the dictionary definitions of noise and sound.

Sound:vibrations that travel through air or another medium and CAN be heard when they reach a persons or animals ear.

Noise:A SOUND that is generally annoing and irritating.

Basiclly saying that sound is the more general term.

I'd say that, yeah, a tree falling would make a sound because if you put a recorder or video camera there and (somehow) make a tree fall, it would make a sound. It doesn't have to be a living thing that picks up the sound.

I mean, c'mon man......

Sound refers to the human perception of sound waves, which are changes in atmospheric pressure around us, which obviously occur when a tree falls.

If there's no human to perceives those waves, then no, no "sound" occurs, but the conditions that would have otherwise created it do.

Didn't read any posts past this one. Just posting to tell you that you're wrong.
Sound is indeed pressure waves, but it has nothing to do with a human being there to hear it.
Is a chair not a chair when you're not there to see it?

It's still sound.

It makes a vibration, so it has the potential to make a sound. It depends on whether you think of a "sound" as a vibration (in which case, it does make a sound) or a vibration entering the human ear (in which case, it doesn't make a sound).

Dumb debate.

It's not a dumb debate. It's a serious philosophical question which has plagued the minds of great thinkers for centuries.

Or in other words a question you can't really answer so why bother trying?

Why don't you try reading my post, you dumb ****

When something makes noise, it's not making sound, but waves of pressure. Which are created whether or not someone's there to receive them.

It's only actual sound when there's an ear to actually perceive those waves, otherwise that's all they are -- pressure waves.

And sound is a "pressure wave" idiot!

Taken from a dictionary in my house.

Sound- mechanical vibrations transmitted by an elastic medium.

Which does not necessarily entail that someone has to hear it.

Case closed, bitches.

I have a good idea that it doesn't. How can sound exist if no-one's around to hear it?
