For anyone who doesn't know, ASBO is short for Anti-Social Behaviour Order. ASBOs were introduced in Northern Ireland in 2005, despite protests from children, young people's groups and a high court legal challenge.

According to the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 ASBOs are issued for "behaviour which causes harassment, alarm or distress to one or more people who are not in the same household as the person the order is against."

Graffiti, abusive behavior and dealing drugs are some of the things that I would consider to be 'anti social behaviour', but you can be issued with an ASBO for something as ordinary as hanging around a street wearing a hoody!

At school we have been debating over the success of ASBO's, and I would like to know some of your views...

(I don't know if they have ASBO's in america or in oriental countries, but I come from England so whatever... If you don't know about them, don't make up crap)

We don't have that here in the US, so I can't say much about it.

I have also just read that :

A 12-year old boy, after being issued with an ASBO, was unable to attend school, since it's within the 'exclusion zone'.

Surely he would be much more likely to get involved in 'anti-social behavior' having nothing to do all day, rather than being in school and getting an education.

ASBOs aren't effective. They're issued badly and bureaucratically (as it the example above) and youths don't really care about them.

They're bad because it costs the police time and money to implement them with no tangible benefit.

I was a chav 2 years a go. Smoked and vandalised and everything. We set a fire in this mobile in this park near a primary school and the police found out. They didn't think me and a couple of other people were involved (we lied) but one of my mate's mates got an ASBO, was excluded from school and now gets into more trouble than before. ASBOs are stupid, a lot of people actually want them to get out of school, and to show off. And chavs are even more stupid than those Ghetto Gangsters I hear so much about in the US. I just can't believe I was one. I still hang around with the same people (minus a few), but we've all matured enough to get out of the chav stage (minus the few I meant when I said "minus a few").

yeh. Some young people regard their ASBO as a sort of, 'badge of honour,' that ups their, 'street cred,' and makes them look tough. In fact, in some areas it was reported that friends of ASBO holders were even feeling left out and trying their best to get an ASBO to be the same!

England is full of the ****ers. Im from Scotland so me and my mates go down there for concerts alot, nearly everytime hell breaks out and I have to second they're a heap of pussies.

And to be on topic, ASBO's are used as a restraining order type thing more than a punishment in some other form. It's usualy to keep a 'dangerous' person away from his 'victims' or an area they cause trouble in. All in all, if they're going to attack someone, why are they going to care if they have a peice of papers saying they aren't allowed to? its just placing the previously broken laws on paper most of the time.
