This was a debate that went over my 40 minute lunch break at school and had about 13 people in it, and we were debating whether or not you can be good at art.
I believe that you can be good at art, but several of my friends where saying that you can't be, seeing as you can't please everyone with the one piece of art, and someone can only be good at art in your opinion.
Can you be good at art?

If you can draw good and have good pen control, you are concidered at being good at art.

Skill in the arts of any kind (such as theatre, music, film and art) is pretty much relational.
I wouldn't take either side. Most of the time, good artists can be recognized as good artists even if every painting doesn't please everybody's tastes.
What about creativity? What about shading, using space, and elaborate colors that work well with each other?

plenty of terrible artists have great pen control and can "draw well"
like dudeman brought up, it's not about proficiency or technical skill, it's about creativity.
someone who draws diagrams of machines or architectural designs may be good at drawing and have great pen control, but he or she is by no means an artist.

Art is not about the image, but the meaning behind it. The emotions you get by looking at it.
Perfectionism doesn't make you an artist. Thinking your stuff does.

You have a 40 minute lunch break?
Asshole.
Anyway, all people have different opinions on what they like. You can maybe please everyone with a certain media to not yet be found to my knowing. Everyone has a taste in every art, and not one can be the same taste to please all.
Thats my opinion.

Well, I was trying to introduce that you need both technical skills and original, inspiring ideas to be a good artist. And when I mean technical, I don't mean that you're good with a pen.
Also agreeing with Big Bang.

Well, it depends on what you're good at, evryone thinks i'm totally freekin' awesome at it... not like I care... I just sketch comics and stuff for no real reason. I put up some art on this site but it came in really crappy... >:( also, if you just start drawing stuff in your free time, you might figure out what you're good at, that's what happened to me, at least......

Art, in the general sense of the word, doesn't just mean drawing, but music, dance, and painting. In every form of art, I judge the artist's skill by their ability to express an emotion or feeling or idea through their particular form of art.
Technical skill plays a role in art, because it gives the artist the tools to express themselves, but their ability to express themselves is what really counts. that's why people can paint completely gorgeous paintings that never get as recognized as, say, Picasso's cubism paintings, because the person wasn't expressing a feeling with technical skill, but just drawing a picture, where as Picasso's paintings are filled with meaning and expression, and each time you look at it again, you discover a new feeling or idea being conveyed in the painting. Same goes with drawing. Somebody draws something hyper-realistic that is technically astounding, but has no feeling expressed, then it gets points for technical skill, but not for feeling. if somebody draws something that really makes you feel the feeling the artist had in mind when they were making it, then that artist is skilled.

I wouldn't say that you can be good or bad at drawing. People just decide on how accurate you draw things, how clear they are, etc. OK, no-one wants a comic book to have smudgy drawings or unclear pictures, but the more you learn, the better 'accuracy' or what Myself said, 'Pen control', you have.
But I wouldn;t say you can be good or bad at art.

This debate sucks, as it is simply a matter of the opinion of the people viewing your art.

You can't be good as in "please everyone" but you can do a good job at what you do. You can't do shit that everybody likes, still you can do good at the shit that you draw.
