Keep in mind that I cannot make the sword huge due to the fact that it would look unrealistic.

Depends.
I can show you a lot of videos (If youtube wasn't gay and let me uploaded them) where I recorded myself doing effects because of the quality. The fire explosion I did took 25 minutes. . . I had to fast forward the video twice to be able to upload it.
