I'm not really sure if this is on topic or not, or whether I'm welcome to give input or not, but whatever.
@Resh, I think you're a cool guy. I can certainly appreciate your work. But to be blunt I think your parents are right on this one. Now I'm not trying to discourage you or anything, in fact you're probably one of the newer animators that I seriously admire, but how do you think will you fare if you do decide to take animation to a more serious level? In your part of the world, how does your art do in terms of financial security? There are literally thousands of great and talented artists - be it digital, on canvas, or music artists, that have gone unnoticed and are having a hard time with living independently because they followed their dreams.
There are certainly people who have succeeded, but for every success story you hear, there's a thousand of failure stories you don't hear.
In the end, I think you should just do what you think you'll regret the least. "I shouldn't have given up on my art" or "I shouldn't have ignored my parents" are the possible things you'd be saying 10 years from now, and I think you should go with the one that you think will leave you less fucked. It seems to be a pathetic philosophy that I can see people would interpret as "selling your soul to the world", but personally I still think it's the more realistic approach.
