I personally train in certain martial arts (Mainly Judo, but I do practice Jeet Kune Do, Muay Thai and whatnot) and I believe they have affected my life in many ways and how I defend myself, as well as giving me confidence and whatnot.
My opinion is that they are useful, and in fighting situations, the right mixture of knowledge and physical ability brought on by martial arts are extremely effective against the average person.
But in reality, how effective are they? I don't mean just Karate or Wushu or that bullshit, but I also mean boxing and wrestling. How useful are they in the real world? I know I have applied it before, but what do you believe they do?
And please, if you don't know anything about them, don't get all "Sticking your fingers in someone's eyes after dancing and yelling can be done by anyone so they suck lol".

Hey thats a good idea dude. You know?If you like to make animations you can use what you've learnt and since you know how you can make it look better because you know the movements and basicly..Boxing is where you punch and wrestling is a your own fighting style. Some WWE wrestlers do different styles so I preffer a different fighting style.Pressure.Hit the same place repeadetly with your empty bones (your knee your joint from knee to foot and your middle joint from fist to shoulders)It may not hurt though it gives pressure and also is good for defence(I would preffer peper spray or either a big katana)lol.

As much as I like to apply martial arts to animation with my knowledge, this topic isn't about that. And lol @ WWE.
Er, although hitting them with your knee and elbow may be useful in certain situations, (Muay Thai uses it often) and the spaces in between the bones can be used (but not for striking), a plan like that is not going to get you anywhere but the hospital.

Bruce lee was once pinned by a wrestler, and the wrestler asked him; "What would you do if this was a real fight and I had you pinned?" And bruce lee replied; "I would bite you of course".
I think you have to go into martial arts with a realistic outlook, Some of them really are outdated and use unnecessary and ineffective movements. Which is why combining some of the differing martial arts together is such a good Idea, you can get the best of all the worlds, and you can separated the ineffective from the effective. You have to understand that in the pace and adrenaline of a real fight, you might forget to do a certain stance, or come to the realization that people don't grab your collar or wrist. You have to be adaptable and free of restrictions in a fight, its your life that is on the line.

I practice Jinenkan, and used to do Shotokan, but i quit after about 2 years. With Jinenkan, a lot of the procedures are extremely complicated, but if you can get them down so that they come naturally, you can end any fight instantly. the problem is, they're REALLY hard to remember in the first place, and on top of that, you'd have to memorize each maneuver AND use them quick enough to avoid punches, kicks, grabs, and blocks. Really until you've been with it for a year or two it has no use.

Depends which martial art. My karate/kickboxing instructor told me to fight dirty on the street. As Bas Rutten said, "there is no such thing as an eye for an eye, I believe it is two eye's, for an eye"

I do Taekwando. And I'm pretty sre this applies to most Martial Arts but using it like use would against a sparring partiner will NEVER work. You have to mix it in with proper fighting.
That's why I do Taekwando, because they have a variety of simple yet effective attacks and counter attacks, and they come nattualy after a while.

Um,I think what the **** im talking about is that when your facing someone face to face the only best thing to do is takecover and use a weapon(best solution is too call the police while covering) just so you know..if your in a gun fight dont ever hide behind a car door youll die once the bullet hits the door...

You're talking total bullshit that I don't understand at all.

Yeah, I was reading about that yesterday. Jeet Kune Do isn't really a new martial art, but rather a hybrid one which is flexible.. though I do have some of his "Tao of Jeet Kune Do" books (My dad has them from like 30 years ago and they are amazing.) and they teach a lot. They teach general self defense rather than being limited to one fighting style, which is cool. Mixing your martial arts is important if you want to be able to survive.Quote from JeremyRespect +9

Rather than depending on which martial art, I believe it depends on the application of such. And it's not really considered fighting dirty on the streets, it's just considered survival.
Go for that solar plexus or "other" weak spots when the situation arises, there is no such thing as honor or pride or whatever when you are in a life and death situation.
Anyone can say "I know Tae Kwon Do!" but if one were to ever say that, you know they lack discipline and probably can't fight at all.

Alike anything else, really. I have been practicing Judo as well as being taught the basics of Jeet Kune Do since I was seven, I turned 15 yesterday. Deflecting a punch in a casual situation is second nature, in a fighting situation, getting there first is my reaction. If you constantly train on something, it becomes a part of your mentality.
I just don't believe in using only one linear martial art for self defense. That stiff body stance and Karate chop will not really get you anywhere if the guy charging at you.

This is a really good point that I think all martial arts instructors should teach. People will joke over kicks to the groin or "cheap shots". But If you take pride into a fight it raises the chances of you losing.

Solar plexus and the liver.
No skill, whack either as hard as you can, fight over.

Well IMO all styles are quite strong , but they differ a bit, like In Martial Arts it matters how long have you been practicing , since you learn alot of new moves and stuff , while on the other hand boxing makes you tough , so dealing with a boxer still wouldn't be peace of cake , and kick boxing i mean thats ****ing speed , but so is martial arts , so you never really know , it also depends on the person , and sometimes , you don't need practicing , if your strong enough and have alot of will it doesn't matter , i mean a punch in the face still hurts , right?
