To begin, the Sage Gods aren't entirely out of left field. As you may recall, the gods rarely actually came to the Humans' domain; often times they just sent a messenger and waited for humans to dance for them. If you look at the Gods's designs overall, you'll see how very human they look as well. Take a look at Tian. He's pretty much the top dog amongst the gods, has this giant dragon and has two dragons from his back. He looks entirely alien compared to everyone else. He's the first look into something deeper in the story, which leads to explaining the Sage Kings (which is less a type of God and more a very poorly defined ranking), exist and why he's so different from the normal gods.

The time skips are a bit forced, and that's because the author doesn't really like the whole "training" arc thing. It's noticeable when they happen because they take realistically long amounts of time unlike some shounen mangas where they train maybe a month or two and are suddenly Mortal Gods (pun intended). It takes some adapting, but it hopefully won't pull you away too much.

In regards to Bai Cai, she isn't the Dark Ones' Leader's actual "sister;" their society refers to each other, when respected, as brother and sister. The reason he calls her sister is because of course, she was able to learn their ways while she was dead (not fully dead, but close enough that her soul passed to Hell). Her learning it as "fast" as she did was due to time differences between planes of existence as well as another one of those time skips the author likes to keep training periods short for readers.

Then we get to Wu Geng. In the beginning, I hated him with a burning passion. His father was awesome, and I had no idea how he had such a shitty son. When his mother killed him to save him, I was more than a little shocked. As for his development... well, you have to take a few things into consideration. The first is of course that he's highly intelligent. That kind of thing almost always causes ego issues in characters, his was just worse than others. Once he was hit with the karma of being out in the body of the slave he half blinded, he had to deal with: shock of his entire country and family being destroyed; the reality that he was in the body of the slave he half blinded and no longer royalty; he became a literal slave. At no point did his base personality really change. He's still an asshole. He's just more of an understanding asshole, because he dropped from the top to the very bottom, and had force his way back up to a position of some power. Does this excuse him as a character? No, but I do feel that it makes him a bit more relatable than some protagonists. And once you get further into the arcs, you'll see the little ups and downs he goes through. While he never fully redeems himself, I do think he has a lot of golden moments showing that his soul isn't totally black, but he'll still never really be a hero.

I personally do prefer him over protagonists like Luffy or Naruto or Ichigo. Not because he's that interesting or amazing a protagonist, but more because I can at least say that I can connect to him and that he doesn't do something I wouldn't believe a real person, given his talents or position, wouldn't do. But I suppose it's all subjective in terms of views of characters.
