After the skip, do remember that he's managed to do something supposedly impossible, stroking his recently damaged ego. He's going to have several sort of jerky back and forth times like that, usually after something happens to boost his pride. But he does, when it's necessary, have a serious attitude that is reminiscent of his father. I think of him as a Chaotic Neutral in terms of his alignment since he only really acts towards his own benefits, except when he starts to legitimately care for Bai Cai, and
he becomes the Governer of the Dark Ones
, which turns him totally serious and only an asshole in a taunting manner to his opponents.
I personally do prefer him over protagonists like Luffy or Naruto or Ichigo. Not because he's
that interesting or amazing a protagonist, but more because I can at least say that I can connect to him and that he doesn't do something I wouldn't believe a real person, given his talents or position, wouldn't do. But I suppose it's all subjective in terms of views of characters.
