Alright, so this is directed towards you, Yalazer, and anyone else who enjoys Assassination Classroom, because I don't in the slightest bit like the premise of the manga but it seems to be insanely popular.
Can you guys tell me what it is you enjoy about Assassination Classroom and what makes it so special? Don't tell me what the manga is about, I already have a rough idea. Tell me why it's special in the most spoiler-free way, and I mean that in the kindest way possible.
You see, I found it incredibly hard to take Assassination Classroom seriously upon the first few chapters. The premise is that an alien is threatening to destroy the entire world, and he hires a class of high schoolers(?) and trains them so they can kill him. Now on paper, this seems like a cool plot, but the way its executed makes it seem very unbelievable and weird. Though it sounds like a dark plot, the atmosphere of the manga feels incredibly shounen and silly.
EDIT:
Just to add, I also feel like I'm being a little unfair to Assassination Classroom. It's shounen and has shounen themes, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing as long as its creative and keeps character development interesting. So far, the impression that I'm getting from others is that Assassination Classroom has great character development. My only problem is that it becomes harder to take the character development seriously when the one driving the character development is the one trying to kill them all.
Take GTO for example. Onizuka is the one that drives each of his students to change into better people. It makes sense because Onizuka is a delinquent adult, and as a delinquent he carries a degree of freedom and expertise that can teach individual students about their problems in unconventional ways. Its believable because Onizuka has a skill set that he can share with secluded students, and the students in turn have a reason to like him as a teacher since he's not willing to bring any harm to them in any way. The alien in the other hand shares really nothing in common with the students. In fact, the only initial relationship he has with the students is that he's willing to annihilate the entire world. While its believable that the alien might try to teach life lessons to the students, its really, really hard to believe that the students equally sympathize with the alien trying to kill them all. I just can't take it seriously.
So I say again: What do you guys enjoy about Assassination Classroom? Is there some rhyme or reason to the manga? Or is just as nonsensically unbelievable as it looks?
