Yeah, I'm liking Steel Ball Run so far, but I have to admit that the stands are really weird. Not like confusing weird like that of Parts 5 and 6, but just unusual. It doesn't even seem like Araki weird. I'm only 30 chapters in, but I still think that having powers that turns everyone into dinosaurs is a bit much for me. Don't get me wrong, I sort of like it and am interested how it pulls through for Diego, but laughed really hard when I saw it for the first time. I also thought Johnny's stand was also really lame compared to previous Joestars. (shooting nails is the power? Really?) Maybe it's a way of solidifying Gyro as the main character of the series, but I thought that his stand was incredibly disappointing and underwhelming. Even in previous parts enemies had more impressive and imposing stands.
I never personally liked Fugo all that much, not because I hated him or anything, but I just felt that Part 5 really didn't do much to really make me care for Fugo as a character in my opinion. I might give Purple Haze Feedback a try, but I have so many things I need to catch up on I doubt I'm going to get to it anytime soon (I just finished Breaking Bad last week lol).
I can understand your disdain for Johnny's powers, but shooting nails is just his first form. There are lots of Jesus parts after all. Also like the fact that in the fighting game you can fight with him both on a horse and not on a horse O_o. But just as how 5 had Bruno take the lead, in this one Gyro is clearly the main character and Johnny the foil for the most of it. For better or worse you might be surprised to find out that Araki completely does away with the concept of Stands as you knew them back then which is kinda fine for me seeing as this is an AU and I'll gladly run with it if only because I think they've run humanoid Stand concepts to the ground. They don't even use the tactic of hitting the Stand to hurt the human anymore. If they did, it's the exception.
If I remember it, most of the fights were Gyro-related but sometimes they worked together. My personal favorite (aside from the final boss) is the guy who could do "Left-Side Ataxia". Trust me, when you see him, you'll know.
But that is exactly why Fugo didn't do anything is because Araki deemed him too OP. Paradox!
Yeah, I'm not super interested in finishing Gamble Fish since it was sort of underwhelming, especially compared to Liar Game, but you caught my attention with Obama playing Russian Roulette. Can you refer the chapter for me lol
Every single thing Obama does in the Final Tourney arc is hilarious. I'll try to list all I can find on him:
- Chapter 102: Obama is introduced as the mysterious 8th participant. He screams YES I CAN! as his introductory declaration.
- Chapter 107: Obama "casually" uses the World Bank to provide himself with enough cash to participate in the gambling tournament.
- Chapter 112: Obama, self proclaimed King of the World (his words), uses the "Spirit of America" to CHAAAAANGE!!!! two Brazillian gambler chicks who were on the verge of having their age sucked away by the spirit of luck. I'm not even kidding; this actually happens.
- Chapter 127: Scroll all the way to the back of this chapter to find a scene where Obama's wife feels an ominous fate concerning her husband.
+*+*+*+*+Obama's Match Officially begins here. I will be mentioning highlights!*+*+*+*+*+*+
- Chapter 128: Before anything ever happens, Obama rides out on a motorcycle with his motorcade and duels revolvers with the bad guy (before the rules were explained). Also, vice-president "Baden" and other members of the staff make an appearance.
- Chapter 129: Obama's wager is if he loses, the Bad Guy's head gets added to Mount Rushmore. Hint hint: This actually happens and its later referenced in the last chapter. I'm just letting you know this because you won't be reading the end of this anyway.
- Chapter 131: Obama is on a losing streak at this point but
someone inspires him to fight again. Won't spoil it. The scene ends with him saying YES I CAN and getting his groove back.
- Chapter 134: Obama requests Baden to give him an American Flag. The reason is really stupid.
- Chapter 138: The Match ends. Note the title of the Chapter and Obama's ending speech before he leaves. He is never seen again until the last chapter.
Personally, I don't think post-timeskip One Piece is very good, but I still love One Piece so I'll follow it till the end lol. That being said, I'm wondering if I don't think post-time skip isn't very good simply because of the pacing caused by reading a single chapter each week, sort of like how I felt with Tower of God after I caught up with the updates, so tell me your thoughts after reading it.
I just finished Dressarosa. Honestly, I liked it, but only because I liked Alabasta and Dressarosa is pretty much Alabasta 2.0. Alabasta is still my favorite; Crocodile > Doflamingo and the fights were better. Dressarosa dragged for so long and I found out later that the fans were getting tired of this ending fatigue. Glad I decided to read it after the arc concluded. All in all it was just nice to see what the other pre-timeskip peeps have been up to but I agree with you that the game has significantly changed. Still, I would prefer it over the other long-running shounen simply because the Oda has a knack for remembering characters and using them when you least expect it.
And personally I just love watching Brook. He's my favorite of the crew and don't really care about the others.
Also, Franken Fran sounds interesting, so I'll be giving that a try in the future.
IT IS. God, I just finished it. I put it off for a long time because I thought it was like a cheap gorefest. But it's actually Black Comedy and the gore isn't all that squicky because it doesn't last for a long time. My only gripe is the cop-out ending but its not like Franken Fran was ever episodic anyway; all her stories were self-contained and the most it was were 2-parters. The last few chapters weren't really that amazing anyway but I like how the author resolved every dangling character arc by the final volume. My only wish is that she had written more Franken Fran because right now her other works remain untranslated.
